Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon is wasting no time.
Hours after New Jersey Gov.
Mikie Sherrill (D) publicly admitted that a software error had allowed nearly 400 non-citizens to actually cast ballots in the state, Dhillon fired off a formal letter launching a federal probe and demanding detailed records on the roughly 6,600 erroneously registered non-citizens—as well as specific voting information for those who cast ballots.
She called the revelation "unacceptable and illegal," while giving the state just five business days to respond.
"Ensuring that U.S. citizens’ votes are not illegally diluted by noncitizens’ votes is of paramount importance," Dhillon wrote.
"We therefore write to formally request additional information to assess New Jersey’s compliance with various federal statutes ..."
Dhillon is asking the state to hand over the full names, dates of birth, nationalities, addresses, and registration details for the roughly 6,600 non-citizens who were wrongly added to the voter rolls.
She also wants the specific voting records for the approximately 400 of them who actually cast ballots—including when and where they voted, plus any mail-in certifications or signatures if applicable.
She warned Sherrill to "please treat this correspondence as a request to preserve any and all records relating to today’s disclosure."
Sherrill publicly acknowledged on Tuesday that a software error in the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission system had erroneously registered thousands of non-citizens to vote between June 2023 and June 2024.
Sherrill, who took office this year, blamed the error on the previous administration of Gov.
Phil Murphy (D) and said a preliminary review showed that fewer than 400 of those individuals actually cast ballots.
As if that is somehow acceptable.
"These individuals answered 'no' when asked on a keypad whether they were a U.S. citizen when applying for drivers' licenses and identification cards, but through no fault of their own, the system registered them anyway," she explained in a lengthy post on X.
Oopsie.

Weird how they always seem to default to registering non-citizens, isn't it?"
Indeed, the errors and the glitches rarely seem to throw a boost to voters who lean Republican.
And, while Sherrill wants you to know that this crazy mishap was not the fault of the non-citizens who were just innocent collateral damage as a result of this glitch, the nearly 400 people who proceeded to vote anyway bear real responsibility.
Earlier this month, Dhillon announced that the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division would be sending federal election monitors to six states for the 2026 primaries.
She proceeded to warn election officials that they could face criminal prosecution for allowing noncitizens to remain on voter rolls or cast ballots.
Perhaps the best part of all this is watching Democrats, who just spent the past few days denying evidence of election fraud laid out by President Trump, even going so far as to mock him, now have to sit here and downplay a tangible example of what he's talking about.
It took all of five days for a Democrat to inadvertently make the case in favor of the SAVE America Act.
Under the Act, new or updated registrations tied to DMV interactions would require affirmative proof of citizenship rather than relying solely on self-attestation or automated systems.
This front-end check could have blocked the erroneous registrations before they happened.
The bill also pushes for better DHS cross-checks on voter rolls, which could have flagged and removed non-citizens after the fact.
And voilà!—Sherrill will never again have to come before the public to explain why non-citizens are casting ballots in her state's elections.
Everyone's a winner.
Especially Americans who'd like to know that their legal vote matters.
