Water woes: NYC cleans up, dries out after torrential storms trigger flooding across the Big Apple 45%

The big clean-up began on Sunday after severe weather brought torrential rain that flooded local streets and highways, disrupted subway service, and caused property damage across the region.
Rain pummeled the five boroughs on Saturday after days of extreme heat and unhealthy air from Canadian wildfire smoke.
Two to four inches of rain covered the city by the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service .
Battery Park in Lower Manhattan was hit with a whopping 3.28 inches just before 10 p.m. on July 18.
At one point during the storm, JFK Airport received 1.35 inches of rain.
A flood watch remained in effect until around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, as strong storms brought damaging wind gusts to parts of the city.
Severe flooding submerged sections of major roadways, prompting temporary closures of the Long Island Expressway, Clearview Expressway and parts of the BQE.
City officials urged motorists to avoid travel as emergency crews responded to flooded underpasses, stalled vehicles and hazardous road conditions.
On-the-spot photos and videos of vehicles submerged in localized floods and people being rescued from flood waters were all over social media by Saturday night.
In one dramatic scene, an FDNY truck raced through flood waters in Queens to rescue stranded drivers who needed to be brought to safety.
ABC 7 got footage of the heroic rescue.
In Queens, a firetruck had to drive through water deep enough to float an SUV so firefighters could rescue drivers stranded on the hood of a truck.

Underground, several subway stations experienced flooding and cascading waterfalls of rain that fell onto trains, tracks and platforms.
The MTA also reported multiple weather-related disruptions throughout day due to the storm.
One clip of a city subway station shows straphangers having to slosh through pools of water that collected on the platform as water cascades down stairs.

Homeowners, including those in Kissena Park, Queens, experienced property damage and downed trees.
Tornado warnings were in effect for much of nearby states, including New Jersey and Delaware.
Residents of these states were advised to immediately take shelter in a basement or interior room.
NYC recovers on Sunday
By late Saturday and into Sunday, many streets that were closed or flooded reopened to traffic, though officials warned of lingering delays, as temperatures were expected to reach 80 degrees with a minimal chance of rain.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani provided an update on the weather and transit to the World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, saying that although Saturday's storms have passed, New Yorkers attending the match should still plan extra time to get there.
"The storms we saw yesterday have cleared up overnight.
And we're hopeful that dry skies will stick around for kickoff," the mayor said.
"Plan extra time to get to the stadium, and make sure you are relying on public transportation to get there."
Meanwhile, some trains were experiencing delays Sunday morning, according to the MTA , including the 2, 4, 5, and C trains.
Like the weather, the city's air quality index improved on Sunday, dropping from unhealthy levels to a moderate level of 68.
Despite the improvement, officials still warned of lingering effects from wildfire smoke in New York.
“We continue to monitor the impacts of wildfire smoke and severe weather on communities across New York State,” Gov.
Kathy Hochul said.
“Lingering effects of smoke from wildfires in Canada and Minnesota may still impact portions of the state on Sunday.
I encourage New Yorkers to stay informed by checking trusted sources for air quality and weather forecasts, and check in with friends and family members who might need help this weekend.”
In the meantime, NYC officials encouraged residents and businesses to report storm damage to help the city assess impacts and coordinate recovery efforts.
