As time runs out on TPS for Haitians, leaders and advocates in Boston urge Congress to take action 54%

The legal status of Haitians in the country with TPS is set to lapse by next week after a Supreme Court decision in June allowed the Trump administration to terminate the program for Haitians and Syrians.
A bill to extend TPS status to Haitian immigrants by three years passed in the U.S.
House in April.
The Senate version, sponsored by Massachusetts U.S.
Sen.
Ed Markey, remains in the upper chamber after it was blocked from passage on Wednesday.
On City Hall Plaza, Clara Raymond, originally from Léogâne, Haiti, danced to Creole lyrics, which she said translate to “Don’t be scared, everything gonna be alright.”
Raymond works with Haitians through the Immigrant Family Services Institute.
“I was expecting more Haitians," she said after tallying her community members around her.
"They’re scared.
They’re afraid ICE might be here.”
Speaking to the demonstrators and supporters during the rally, Wu acknowledged the tumult that the Haitian community has gone through.
“Even as pained as we are, as exhausted and angry as we are, my heart is still filled with gratitude for this community who show up time and time again whenever the moment demands it,” she said.
“ We cannot function as a society, as a community, as an economy, as a people, when the bonds of trust are ripped apart.”
Uncertainty has gripped the Haitian community here for months.
Many have lost their jobs as employers anticipate workers losing their legal status, despite pleas from public officials to keep workers in the interim.
Gov.
Maura Healey has warned of dire economic consequences of losing these workers in healthcare, construction and other fields.
Driscoll echoed that message on Thursday, saying Haitians are valuable contributors to Massachusetts communities, working in long-term caregiving, childcare, construction and small businesses.
“They pay taxes, they volunteer, they worship alongside us, and they're helping build a stronger Massachusetts every single day,” she said.
“ We stand with them, we will fight with them, and we will not stop until justice is done.”
Louijeune, whose parents were Haitian immigrants, described being in a legal clinic where members of the community came with worries and questions.
“ People who have been here for decades who are now at a point of fear because they don't know what tomorrow will hold,” she said.
“They're asking me, ‘Will I have my job?
What will happen to my children?’”
Louijeune said conditions in Haiti are unsafe for many people to return to due to gang violence and widespread hunger.
The TPS program was initiated by Congress in 1990 to allow eligible migrants to live and work in the U.S. if their home countries were afflicted by natural disasters or conflicts.
Haitians have been eligible for the status since a devastating earthquake in 2010.
Thousands of TPS holders live and work in Massachusetts, and the largest group hails from Haiti.
Massachusetts is home to roughly 19,000 Haitians with temporary legal status, according to researchers at Princeton University who based their count on U.S.
Census data.
One-in-five Haitian TPS holders in Massachusetts have children who are U.S. citizens, according to the Center for Migration Studies.
State Attorney General Andrea Campbell has encouraged Haitians wishing to stay in the U.S. to pursue other paths of legal residency, and for adults to assign “caregiver authorization” for their children to a trusted adult in case of their deportation.
