US sea drone maker unveils 4,000-acre Texas shipyard for military, commercial ships 46%

Maritime defense technology company Saronic announced on Thursday that it will build a new $3 billion shipyard in Brownsville, Texas. 
The project, named Port Alpha, aims to boost U.S. shipbuilding for defense and commercial ships. 
Construction is set to start later this year, with operations beginning in 2028. 
The company said Port Alpha will be among the most advanced shipyards in the country. 
This announcement comes as the U.S. government works to boost domestic shipbuilding by increasing industrial capacity and reducing reliance on foreign production. 
At first, the defense firm will develop about 835 acres (1.3 square miles) at the Port of Brownsville. 
The site could eventually expand to nearly 4,400 acres (6.9 square miles). 
Facility planned for large military and commercial vessels 
Port Alpha will initially be capable of building ships measuring up to 850 feet (259 meters) long. 
The future expansions will allow it to build vessels over 1,200 feet (366 meters) long. 
The company plans to manufacture both defense and commercial ships, including crewed and autonomous models. 
While the firm did not reveal details about future products, Saronic co-founder and CEO Dino Mavrookas confirmed the company is expanding beyond unmanned vessels . 
“We’re not going to give specifics on what our next product line is going to be, but yes, we are going to build both manned and unmanned ships,” he stated. 
“The manned ships are going to be very differentiated in that we’re going to incorporate all of the technology that we’re building to make these manned ships more efficient, and then de-man them as we move into the future.” 
The company revealed that the new shipyard will use software-driven manufacturing methods and advanced production systems to increase output while lowering construction costs. 
Thousands of jobs and major regional investment 
Saronic expects Port Alpha to create up to 10,000 direct jobs over the next decade. 
The positions will include welding, machining, robotics, software engineering, and naval architecture. 
The company said it will work with Texas officials, Cameron County, and local educational institutions to establish workforce training and apprenticeship programs for the project. 
It estimates the development could generate more than $160 billion in regional economic impact for Cameron County and $264.5 billion across Texas. 
Governor Greg Abbott welcomed the investment, saying , “Today marks history with the announcement of the most advanced shipyard in the entire world. 
When this shipyard gets fully built out, there will be about 10,000 employees. 
Saronic is going to be providing about $750 million in annual paychecks to Texans. 
That’s game-changing for the population of Texas. 
As Governor, I’m proud that Saronic calls Texas home.” 
Expansion follows combat use of autonomous vessels 
Saronic already builds autonomous surface vessels at its shipyard in Franklin, Louisiana. 
The facility manufactures the Corsair and will continue producing the company’s 180-foot (55-meter) Marauder autonomous vessel while adding 300,000 square feet (27,900 square meters) of production space. 
According to U.S. 
Central Command, several Corsair vessels struck a submarine and a ship maintenance facility in Iran on Sunday, marking the first combat use of American unmanned surface vessels. 
Mavrookas said the Texas expansion was not linked to those operations and that the announcement followed completion of the company’s agreement for the site.
