Fox News’ Laura Ingraham said Friday that reporting detailing how an Iranian threat forced President Donald Trump not to use his gifted Qatari jet undercuts his claims on the war in the region, declaring, “We didn’t decimate their military capabilities, obviously.”
While speculation of security concerns has been spreading since early July over the reasoning behind Trump’s switch back to the original Air Force One for his journey home from the NATO Summit in Turkey, The New York Times reported Friday, per multiple people briefed on the matter, that officials deemed there was “a credible threat that Iranian proxy forces were targeting him and Air Force One.”
At the time, Trump claimed the switch was because he wanted to allow American troops in Britain to see the $400 million Qatari gift.
“So, if Iran can credibly threaten Air Force One overseas,” said Ingraham on The Ingraham Angle Friday, “we didn’t decimate their military capabilities, obviously.
They are still capable of a lot of harm.”
Here, Ingraham is referring to claims by the president, which he’s made multiple times throughout the conflict, that Iran has been “decimated for a 10-year period.”
The war in Iran began Feb.
28.
A tentative ceasefire was reached in April, and then broken in June.
A memorandum of understanding was reached later in June, and consequently also broken.
Since then, the U.S. and Iran have continued to exchange deadly military strikes, with four American service members killed just this past weekend.
As for the Times ‘ reporting on the matter, on Thursday, the Department of Justice withdrew subpoenas seeking phone records and grand jury testimony from three reporters who assisted in covering the initial speculation over the plane switch.
Federal Judge Arun Subramanian sharply criticized the government’s handling of the case and indicated he would quash the subpoenas, questioning whether prosecutors had even followed the legal standards for subpoenaing journalists.
On Friday, Trump maintained that the subpoenas were strictly meant to find the “leakers” responsible.
