The Bank of Japan’s governor, Haruhiko Kuroda, said Tuesday that the central bank’s ultra-loose monetary policy is “appropriate” for the current economic situation, as it continues to support the nation’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking at a meeting with business leaders in Osaka, Kuroda reiterated the BOJ’s commitment to maintaining its massive asset-purchase program and negative interest rate policy until a stable 2% inflation target is achieved.
“We are committed to continuing with monetary easing until we achieve our price stability target,” Kuroda said, adding that the BOJ will closely monitor the economic impact of the pandemic and take necessary measures to ensure financial stability.
He also noted that the global economic outlook remains uncertain due to factors such as the ongoing war in Ukraine and rising energy prices, which could affect Japan’s economy.
Kuroda’s remarks come as the BOJ faces increasing pressure to normalize its monetary policy amid rising inflation in other major economies.
However, the central bank has maintained that Japan’s inflation is largely driven by cost-push factors and is not yet sustainable.
The BOJ’s next policy meeting is scheduled for June 16-17, where further guidance on the future direction of monetary policy is expected.
