Police investigating downtown Boston stabbing, days after Mayor Wu’s private meeting on crime spike
Boston Police are investigating another incident of downtown violence, this time a stabbing that left a man hospitalized Friday, two days after the mayor held a closed-door meeting to address the area’s crime spike.
Officers responded to a report of a person stabbed in the Downtown Crossing area of Tremont Street and Temple Place at about 1:48 p.m., police said.
A man was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
No arrests have been made and the incident is under investigation.
The stabbing comes as downtown stakeholders have been raising the alarm about a recent spike of violence in the area, highlighted by five people who had been shot over a 16-day span, from June 29 to July 15.
Last week, a man died from an attack that occurred near the corner of Boston Common.
The suspect allegedly went on to attack another person with a metal pole, before being arrested.
Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn, who represents the downtown, said the stabbing is another example of the violence that he says is getting out of hand there.
“We must acknowledge that public safety conditions and the quality of life for residents in downtown Boston have declined significantly,” Flynn said in a statement to the Herald.
“Part of the solution includes more police officers in the neighborhood and a commitment to hold people accountable in our court system for their criminal behavior,” Flynn added.
“Residents and workers throughout downtown Boston deserve to live and work in a safe and healthy neighborhood.”
Flynn attended a closed-door City Hall meeting held Wednesday by Mayor Michelle Wu that he says was sparked by recent downtown violence.
Also attending were the police commissioner, state and city officials, business leaders, and community stakeholders.
Through a spokesperson, Wu said the city’s downtown remains safe, but acknowledged back-to-back “isolated” incidents can make people feel unsafe.
