Knicks president of basketball operations Leon Rose doesn’t speak about how he built his team that’s on the brink on its first championship in 53 years.
In fact, the executive doesn’t speak at all.
But as his team prepped for the biggest game of the season against the Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, the Knicks spoke about how the former agent put together this roster of destiny.
“I mean, when you’re an agent, I think anyone who knows the sports agency business, it’s all about relationships,” Karl-Anthony Towns said about Rose, who has yet to publicly speak with the media since April 2020.
“What Leon is one of the best in the world at is having genuine, loving relationships with people.”
The Knicks hired Rose as team president in March of 2020.
At the team, he replaced Steve Mills, who the franchise fired a month prior.
Rose, the former co-head of the basketball division at CAA Sports, represented All-Stars such as LeBron James, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony during his time as a super agent.
The long list of clients also included Towns, who eventually reunited with Rose after being traded to New York following nine seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The reunion ended a rebuilding era for the Knicks — which included moves to sign Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle, who was sent to Minnesota in the Towns deal — and opened a championship window that has now given the franchise a clear look at the Larry O’Brien trophy.
“I think because of that, you see the way our team acts, the way our team conducts itself,” Towns said of Rose’s approach as team president.
“We conduct ourselves like family, and he’s always had that family mantra in everything he’s done.”
Rose took over the team following a COVID-shortened season in which the Knicks finished 21-45 — good for 12th in Eastern Conference standings.
A couple months after Rose’s hiring, the team brought on Tom Thibodeau as head coach to oversee a team led by Randle, who arrived an offseason prior under previous management.
That team made it to the first-round of the playoffs after seven consecutive seasons without clinching a postseason berth.
The summer of 2022 witnessed Rose's best move yet.
After clearing roughly $30 million of cap space, the team signed Brunson to a four-year $104 million contract.
The ex-Mavericks guard joined a team that already employed his father, Rick, as an assistant coach.
Talk about relationships.
That signing eventually turned a franchise used to disarray to one with legit postseason hopes.
Rose believed in the roster so much that he felt a change of head coach was needed to get over the hump, which led to the firing of Thibodeau and hiring of Mike Brown last offseason.
“Hasn’t changed, man.
Leon's one of the best dudes I’ve ever been around,” Brown said when asked what stood out about Rose's approach as Knicks president.
“I’ll throw out the agent, throw out the president, I’m just talking pure human being.”
Brown's relationship with Rose predated their simultaneous New York tenure.
Brown remembered doing a favor for Rose years ago when he was head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers — a favor he normally wouldn’t do.
Rose asked Brown to speak with his son's high school team in New Jersey around the time the Cavs had a game scheduled against the Nets.
“We weren’t tight, we weren’t best friends, but the interactions we had, there was something there for me,” Brown said.
“I had zero clue he’d be [Knicks] president and we’d be working together someday.
Just because who he was as a human being, I was like, ‘yeah.’
“So on a day off, I jumped in a car, went and spoke to his son's team, that was that.
Now you fast forward and we’re here together and he's been an absolute — no matter what happens going forward.
I don’t care what happens going forward, he's been an absolute joy to work with.”
All of the relationships Rose fostered for decades are now paying dividends as the Knicks are just one game away from securing an NBA title.
And along the way, Brown believed Rose's leadership is responsible for such memorable comebacks and performances the Knicks displayed to get this far.
“Not just this series, but our whole playoff run.
There were times when we had our backs against the wall.
There was really no panic.
There was no panic from ownership, from Leon, from the staff, all the way down through the players,” Brown said.
