Why “Likes” Hit Harder When You’re Depressed 10%

One of the core features of depression is anhedonia: a reduced ability to experience pleasure, including from things that would normally feel rewarding.
In clinical lab settings, this tends to show up as blunted reinforcement learning.
People with depression are less driven by rewards, less shaped by them, slower to update their behaviour based on what feels good.
*So they should be the last people to keep posting for likes.

What 17 Million Posts Showed
A study published this week in *JAMA Psychiatry* looked at the real-world posting behaviour of 7,736 Twitter users, across more than 17 million posts (Mirea et al., 2026).
Researchers measured each person's "reinforcement tendency": the degree to which receiving likes on one day predicted how much they posted the following day.
The finding was the opposite of what clinical research would suggest.
People with depression showed a greater tendency to be reinforced by likes, not a blunted one.
This held across three separate datasets, with different populations, different depression measures, and substantial differences in sample composition.
It replicated every time.
And when researchers dug into the specificity of the effect, it was clearly tied to depression in particular.
Compulsivity and intrusive thinking predicted a different pattern, behavioural persistence.
Anxiety showed a different profile again.
The amplified reinforcement from likes was not a general psychiatric signal.
It was specific to the anxious-depression cluster.
Why This Doesn't Quite Contradict Itself
The gap between these findings and the lab-based anhedonia research is real, but it isn't necessarily a contradiction.
It might be pointing at something more specific.
What lab studies tend to measure is consummatory reward: the pleasure you feel in the moment of receiving something good.
Anhedonia blunts that.
What this study appears to be capturing is something closer to motivational reinforcement: how much a past reward drives future behaviour, regardless of whether the reward felt deeply satisfying in the moment.
Put differently, depression may not make likes feel better.
It may make them work harder on behaviour anyway.
What This Means If You're Healing Out Loud
In an earlier post titled "Healing in Public: When Heartbreak Has an Audience," I wrote about the psychology of processing grief and heartbreak publicly online.
The research I looked at there suggested that writing for an audience who understands your experience can support genuine psychological growth.
This new study adds a layer to that.
If the person sharing their pain publicly has depressive symptoms, which is common during grief and loss, the likes they receive may be shaping their posting behaviour more powerfully than they realise.
Not as a form of manipulation.
More as a neurological feedback loop, running quietly underneath the experience of feeling heard.
That isn't necessarily bad.
It may be part of why sharing feels sustainable, why people keep going back to post again.
But it's worth knowing that the loop exists.
What I'm Still Thinking About
This study raises more questions than it answers.
The researchers are careful to note that the direction of the relationship isn't clear from the data.
Depression may make you more responsive to likes.
Or being heavily shaped by likes may, over time, contribute to depressive symptoms.
Or both.
A cross-sectional design can't separate those.
What it does establish is that depression and social reward are interacting in a way the lab never quite predicted.
And that real-world behaviour is doing something different from what the controlled setting suggested.

This study is part of why that question matters.
