The line of baseball fans waiting to get into the Mariners game looked a little different on Thursday afternoon.
Mixed in among the sea of blue-and-green Seattle jerseys were bright yellow-and-green shirts.
They didn’t belong to the visiting Baltimore Orioles fans, but soccer fans from the other side of the world.
While visiting Seattle to cheer on Team Australia in the FIFA men’s World Cup, many Australians soccer fans took the opportunity to enjoy a far less expensive sporting event: a midweek, daytime baseball game.
“Well, you have to while you’re here, right?”
said Steven Burke, who was visiting for the World Cup and his 50th birthday.
“It’s the American way of life.”
Burke, like a lot of Australians in Seattle for the World Cup, is following his soccer team down the West Coast.
Starting in Vancouver, B.C., last week, Burke watched Australia defeat Turkey.
On Friday, Australia plays the U.S. team in Seattle before going to San Francisco to face Paraguay next week.
The Emerald City was the clear favorite of the Aussies, though maybe by default.
“I’ve never been to any other city in the U.S., so I guess Seattle is the best,” said Craig O’Donoghue, visiting from Perth with his son.
"It's a great sporting town.
Why not come and watch a game like this?”
O’Donoghue said Seattle may have a special connection with the land down under, and rattled off some of his favorite Australians who have come to the United States to play professionally, ncluding Seahawks punter Michael Dickson.
“Lauren Jackson's a legend of the Seattle Storm, we've got Jade Melbourne and Ezi Magbor playing there at the moment,” O’Donoghue said, “plus Sami Whitcombe and Tully Bevilaqua.
There's so many Aussies who have succeeded over here.”
Plus, as O’Donoghue tugs on his jersey, the Australian men’s soccer team wear the same gold and green as the Storm and former Sonics.
Australian fans were spotted at multiple Mariners games this week, including bringing an inflatable kangaroo along.
A large rally and march to the stadium is scheduled for Friday morning before kick-off at noon.
Most fans said they felt fairly certain in their “Socceroos” after the 2-0 win over Turkey last week in Vancouver.
O’Donoghue did not hesitate and said he felt “extremely confident” in Australia’s chances over the U.S.
“You Yanks are very, very cocky,” he said.
“We know that we will defend like absolute champions, we know you guys will wanna have the ball and attack, and when you come from a land down under, then you just know that you're gonna play with heart and spirit, and that's exactly what you'll see from Australia.”
