Sen. Ernst to Newsmax: ICE, Border Patrol Funding Take Priority Over Weaponization Fund 74%

Republicans must keep their attention on funding border security and immigration enforcement despite growing divisions within the GOP over a proposed fund designed to compensate Americans who claim they were wronged by the federal government, Sen.
Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, told Newsmax Tuesday.
Appearing on "National Report," Ernst acknowledged there were disagreements within the party over the so-called "weaponization fund" but stressed that the larger priority remains securing additional resources for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection through the budget reconciliation process.
"I think what we have discovered is that there are many different personalities in the Republican Party, and we are trying to sort through this," she said.
The comments come as some prominent Republicans have openly criticized the proposal.
Sen.
Thom Tillis, R-N.C., recently described the fund as "stupid on stilts," while former Vice President Mike Pence called it a "bad idea from the start" and urged the Trump administration to abandon it.
Critics have raised concerns that the fund could be used to compensate individuals convicted in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, protests at the U.S.
Capitol, a prospect Pence said would be "deeply offensive" to many Americans.
Ernst did not endorse or reject the proposal outright but said discussions are ongoing about how the fund would operate and whether it is an appropriate mechanism for addressing grievances against the federal government.
Ernst said, "It is important to the president.
It is important to members of the GOP as well that if there are citizens that have grievances against the federal government, if they have been wronged in any sort of level or way, that they have their day in court.
How we go through this, that is yet to be determined.
But I do look forward to learning more about this."
While debate over the fund has generated headlines, Ernst argued that Republicans cannot afford to lose sight of what she called the most pressing issue before Congress: securing additional funding for immigration enforcement agencies.
"Actually, I do think that that is part of the discussion, is how we continue to focus on funding CBP and ICE," Ernst said.
"This is what we have to do.
This is the most important part of reconciliation, and we have to move that forward."
Congressional Republicans have sought increased funding for border security operations as part of President Donald Trump's broader immigration agenda.
GOP lawmakers argue that additional resources are needed to sustain enforcement efforts, expand detention capacity, and continue deportation operations.
Ernst blamed Democrats for the current funding battle, saying that opposition from the left has complicated efforts to provide immigration agencies with additional resources.
"The reason we're in this situation, it's not because of this fund.
It's not because of discussions or disagreements within the GOP.
It's because Democrats refuse to fund Customs and Border Patrol and ICE," Ernst said.
"These are really important departments.
They are really important for safety and security here in the United States of America," she added.
Ernst repeatedly sought to distinguish the border funding debate from the controversy surrounding the proposed compensation fund, characterizing the latter as a secondary issue compared to immigration enforcement.
"Whether it is the fund that's established to compensate those that have been wronged by the federal government, whether it's other discussions, those are side discussions," Ernst said.
"The most important issue that we have in front of us this week, and perhaps next week, is funding of ICE and CBP."
