President Donald Trump hailed the completion of one of his most recent projects in the nation’s capital: The renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
On Saturday, Trump announced in a post to his Truth Social platform, “All work is complete!”
He attached a photo of Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum “inspecting the very complex, but powerful, Dark Blue surface of the Reflecting Pool, prior to submerging it in CLEAN, BEAUTIFUL WATER.”
The president explained that the tribute to President Abraham Lincoln first opened in 1922, but for more than a century, it never functioned properly.
In April, he announced the project, which he started after a friend visited Washington, D.C., from Germany and said the water was dirty.
He explained at the time that the “various stones” used at the bottom of the pool, including granite, were not meant to be submerged underwater for an extended period.
The Biden administration estimated a refurbishment of the pool to cost $301 million and take three to three-and-a-half years to complete because it would involve replacing the original stone.
Instead, Trump, a former real estate developer who had built several swimming pools, called in a connection within the swimming pool industry to scrub, grout and cover the stones with an “industrial-grade swimming pool topping” to prevent leaks and keep the pool clean.
The president also selected a shade of “American Flag Blue” to coat the bottom of the pool.
In the end, rather than over $300 million, the restoration cost about $13 million, according to Interior Department documentation cited by the New York Post.
Instead of three years, the project took less than two months.
“THE BEST IS YET TO COME with The Trump Promenade at The Lincoln Memorial, and The Triumphal Arch, which will be, along with the White House Ballroom, when completed, the Greatest Structure in Washington,” Trump continued.
The promenade, announced this week, will create a pedestrian bridge to connect the Lincoln Memorial to the Potomac River, fulfilling Senator James McMillan’s 20th Century vision for the National Mall’s future, known as the McMillan Plan.
Trump’s White House ballroom construction is also underway and expected to be completed in 2028 before the end of Trump’s term.
He previously said he intends for future administrations to be able to host presidential inaugurations in the space.
