Virginia Democrat Senator Tim Kaine has broken ranks with members of his own party by rejecting claims that the murder conviction of 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony was racially motivated.
Anthony, who is Black, was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison by a Texas jury for the fatal April 2025 stabbing of 17-year-old student-athlete Austin Metcalf, who was White, during a high school track meet in Frisco.
The media-frenzied trial, which concluded earlier this week in Collin County, quickly transformed into a national debate.
Following the verdict, several well-known Democrats and far-left civil rights advocates publicly decried the ruling, describing the conviction and 35-year sentence as a racially unequal judicial process that “disproportionately penalizes young Black men.”
Critics of the verdict argued that the “racist” jury unfairly rejected Anthony’s claim of self-defense, which argued that he had acted out of fear during a physical confrontation with Metcalf inside a crowded team tent.
The public outcry intensified online and outside the courthouse, where emotional demonstrations led to clashes and multiple arrests, as disappointed supporters of Anthony expressed outrage.
Nonetheless, Senator Kaine (D-Va.) pushed back against the narrative that race dictated the courtroom outcome.
In a Fox News interview, reported by The Washington Times, the veteran Virginia lawmaker and former civil rights attorney emphasized the importance of respecting the jury's decision based on the evidence presented throughout the eight-day trial.
Kaine stated that while the tragedy has “devastated both families and deeply shaken the local community,” accusing the 12-person jury of racism completely undermines the core framework of the legal system, especially in a case where prosecutors demonstrated that Anthony brought a hidden knife to the meet and initiated an unjustified escalation.
“I have a hard time understanding why they would say that,” Kaine told Fox News Digital when asked about claims from Democrats that the verdict was unfair and/or racially charged.
“I know what they’re saying, but I have a hard time understanding.”
Kaine’s break from the ongoing rhetoric of his party's progressive wing aligns closely with sentiments expressed by the victim's family, who have fiercely maintained from the beginning that the tragedy was a matter of right and wrong  rather than race.
Following the sentencing, Austin Metcalf's father, Jeff Metcalf, condemned the outside political and racial exploitation of his son's death, reiterating that the legal proceedings were strictly about accountability for a senseless act of violence.
