Iran and Israel have announced they will pause attacks after a plea by Donald Trump for both sides to stop shooting “immediately”, as renewed conflict threatened peace talks between Tehran and Washington.
But the ceasefire is teetering on a knife edge, as both sides vow to resume attacks if their conditions are not met.
Tehran warned it would carry out “much more severe and crushing” attacks if Israel did not halt its attacks on Lebanon, while Israel said it would attack southern Lebanon if Hezbollah fired rockets in its direction.
The Israeli military had earlier said it is prepared to fight for “as long as it takes” but that it could conclude within several days.
Israel launched airstrikes on central and western Iran in the early hours of Monday, with explosions reported in several Iranian cities, including Tehran, Isfahan, Tabriz and Karaj.
The Israeli attacks came after a plea from Trump not to respond to Iranian missile attacks, which came in response to an Israeli attack on Beirut.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Israel does not take independent action without consulting Washington.
White House officials have denied this, telling Axios that the US "had no part in this?"
