JB Pritzker announced Friday he is temporarily pausing tax breaks for data centers that apply to build in the state.
Beginning July 1, Pritzker said the state will halt processing applications to the tax incentives program run by its Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
Pritzker said he took action on his own because lawmakers failed to suspend incentives during the just-completed legislative session.
He is calling on lawmakers to build a framework during the fall veto session for how data centers should be developed.
“Illinois has an opportunity to continue leading in technological innovation and economic growth, but we also have a responsibility to protect working families and local communities as the data center industry rapidly expands,” Pritzker said in a statement.
In Friday’s release, Pritzker outlined a seven-step framework to address the overall impact of data centers, including a requirement that data centers post public notices when applying for permits and that they regularly report their energy and water use.
Pritzker’s office estimates that data center demand has already increased costs by $13 billion in the regional power grid.
He cited a recent report that said demand could raise costs by another $37 billion in Illinois in the next few years.
