The U.S. and Iran have been engaged in a series of talks in recent months aimed at resolving a long-standing dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.
The two countries have agreed to a framework that would limit Iran’s uranium enrichment activities in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
The deal, which was brokered by the United Nations Security Council, is expected to be formally announced later this week.
Abe said Japan will continue to support the U.S. and Iran in their efforts to achieve a lasting peace in the region.
