Jackson Women’s Health decision last week, as the Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced earlier this month that they were endorsing Graham Platner in his race for U.S.
Senate.
“Mainers deserve a senator they can trust to have their backs at every turn.
It is clear that is not Susan Collins,” said Planned Parenthood Action Fund President and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson.
“We know we can count on Graham Platner to fight for everyone to get the essential, life-saving care they need as part of a pro-reproductive rights Senate majority.”
In its statement, Planned Parenthood Action Fund compared Sen.
Susan Collins to Graham Platner, who is running to replace her.
In contrast to Collins, Johnson continued, “we know we can count on Graham Platner to fight for everyone to get the essential, life-saving care they need as part of a pro-reproductive rights Senate majority.”
At last week’s event in Portland, Zoe Reich shared her struggle to access the abortion care her doctors knew she needed.
Reich’s pregnancy was healthy until a routine scan detected severe fetal abnormalities.
By the time Reich had the information she needed, she had passed the point in her pregnancy when her home state would allow doctors to act.
Her doctors knew what she needed, she said.
But their hands were simply tied.
So Reich and her husband left their support network behind, boarded a plane, and flew across the country to one of the few clinics that could still provide the abortion care she needed — at a cost of roughly $10,000 out of pocket, plus days away from home.
The Dobbs v.
Jackson Women’s Health decision issued on June 24, 2022 eliminated the federal constitutional right to abortion established by Roe v.
Wade.
Advocates criticized Sen.
Susan Collins and traced a direct line from Collins’ decisive 2018 vote to confirm Justice Brett Kavanaugh — cast after a 48-48 Senate deadlock — to the 5-4 ruling that overturned Roe four years later .
Maine State Sen.
Jill Duson, who spoke at the event, also called out Republican gubernatorial candidate Bobby Charles.
She noted that he has called abortion “abhorrent,” describes himself as “unapologetically pro-life,” and has pledged to roll back abortion rights in Maine if elected.
The midterm elections this November are crucial for election pro-choice politicians, Duson continued.
“That’s why we need to elect Hannah Pingree for governor, and send Graham Platner, an unequivocally pro-choice Democrat, to the United States Senate,” Duson said.
