FLINT, Mich. — The Flint River Flotilla Fest will return this summer after a five-year hiatus, inviting residents to celebrate the Flint River with a day of paddling, music, food and community activities.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1, 2026, and is hosted by the Friends of the Flint River Watershed Coalition in partnership with the Flint River Watershed Coalition, Genesee County Parks and Tenacity Brewing.
"We're excited to welcome back returning participants while introducing a new generation of residents to everything the Flint River has to offer," said Jaime Welch, Associate Director of the Flint River Watershed Coalition.
"The Flotilla is more than just a fun day on the water—it's an opportunity for people to experience the river firsthand, celebrate the progress happening throughout the corridor, and build a stronger connection to one of our community's greatest natural resources."
This year’s theme, “Rise Above, Flow Free,” highlights the resilience of the Flint River and the surrounding community.
Organizers said the theme was inspired by the image of a phoenix rising from the ashes and reflects the river’s ongoing recovery following the 2022 Lockhart Chemical spill, as well as future developments along the river corridor, including Michigan’s newest state park.
Participants are invited to decorate kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, rafts and pool floats, or dress in costumes, before joining hundreds of paddlers for a float from Tenacity Brewing to Mott Park Recreation Area.
The route will take participants through downtown Flint, Chevy Commons and the future state park area, showcasing the river as a place for recreation, wildlife and environmental stewardship.
Following the float, the Flotilla Fest after-party will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at Tenacity Brewing.
The event will include live music from the Flint Institute of Music, food from Bella’s and Vehicle City Tacos, family-friendly activities and community partners.
The after-party is sponsored by ChoiceOne, Gazall Lewis and Associates Architects, and Rowe Engineering.
Participants should park at Mott Park Recreation Area on Sunset Drive, east of Ballenger Highway.
The Mass Transportation Authority will provide complimentary shuttle service to transport participants to registration and the launch site at Tenacity Brewing.
Those bringing kayaks, canoes or larger flotation devices should first unload equipment at Tenacity Brewing, located at 119 N.
Grand Traverse St., before parking at Mott Park and taking the shuttle back to the launch area.
Parking will not be available at Tenacity Brewing.
Launches begin at 10 a.m. and will depart every 30 minutes through 11:30 a.m.
Organizers recommend arriving 20 to 30 minutes before a scheduled launch time to allow for parking, shuttle transportation, check-in and preparation of inflatable watercraft.
Registration costs $25 for adults ages 18 and older, $10 for youth ages 11 to 17, and is free for children 10 and younger.
Life jackets are required for all participants.
A limited number of life jackets, pool floats and kayak rentals will be available.
Residents can register, reserve equipment or learn more about the event at the Flotilla Fest registration website .
