CASPER, Wyo. — A panel of local teenagers awarded a $100,000 implementation grant to the Casper Youth Hub as part of Youth Takeover Week, an annual event organized by the Natrona Collective Health Trust.
The program utilizes participatory grantmaking, a strategy where funding choices are made by the demographic most affected by the issues being addressed.
This year’s panel, comprised of teens ages 13-19, reviewed progress from several local organizations that received a combined $150,000 in grants last year.
The returning grantees included the Natrona County Library, Mercer Family Resource Center, David Street Station and the Casper Youth Hub.
Throughout the evaluation process, the tens measured projects based on planning, readiness and the level of youth involvement, according to a release from the trust.
After questioning presenters and debating the potential impact of the funds, the group selected the Casper Youth Hub for the award, citing the Hub’s youth-led planning process and its immediate ability to serve young people as primary factors for the decision.
The Casper Youth Hub, which opened earlier this month, was developed through a youth participatory action research group that influenced everything from its location to its interior design.
The facility currently features a lounge, art studio, maker space, and production studio.
Since its opening, the Hub has seen 30 visitors and has 70 more individuals registered to use the space.
Other projects funded last year also reported significant progress.
The Natrona County Library established a 10-member Teen Advisory Board to guide renovations of its Teen Zone, while the Mercer Family Resource Center is nearing completion of a youth-designed space intended to feel like a living room.
David Street Station utilized its funding to increase seasonal staff by 20%, providing leadership roles for local youth during community events.
The Casper Recreation Foundation worked with architectural and construction firms to develop a concept for The Point, which would include four distinct zones for recreation and gaming at the Casper Recreation Center.
Although the foundation did not receive the implementation grant this year, the Trust stated it remains committed to supporting the project as it moves forward.
Samantha Smith, vice president of programs at the Trust, said the teens engaged in critical thinking and asked difficult questions throughout the process.
Smith noted that the initiative demonstrates the value of trusting young people with significant community decisions.
“The Trust didn’t choose who received this grant.
The teens did,” said Beth Worthen, CEO of the Trust.
“That is the entire point of Youth Takeover Week: putting real money and real trust in the hands of the young people who understand what their peers need most.”
At time of publication, representatives from the Casper Youth Hub had not responded to requests for comments from Oil City News.
