Yen continues to test fresh lows as Nikkei 225 hits new highs 50%

The yen traded comfortably in intervention territory on Monday and was met only by lukewarm verbal pushback, and then silence, as it crawled within a few tenths of a yen of a multidecade low.
Japan’s currency traded at ¥161.7 to the dollar in the afternoon, just short of the ¥161.8 it hit momentarily late last week.
If it breaks ¥161.95, last reached in July 2024, the yen would be its weakest against the dollar since December 1986.
On Monday morning, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said authorities stand ready to “take appropriate action at any time if necessary.”
Her comments fell short of the rhetoric deployed just ahead of Japan’s $73 billion effort to prop up the currency in April — when she said, “The time to take the decisive action that I have been warning about is nearing.”
Investors and analysts have been viewing ¥160 to the dollar as the red line beyond which authorities will intervene.
It has been trading above that level for a week and above ¥161 for about two trading days.
Some analysts said that the government may be hesitant to make a move to prop up the yen, as intervention might not be effective.
“The dollar-yen pair is expected to hold firm at its highs, driven by persistent dollar-buying pressure,” a report by Mizuho Bank said.
The United States and Iran held high-level talks in Switzerland aimed at ending hostilities.
They have reportedly made progress, agreeing on a road map toward a final deal within 60 days and setting up communication lines to keep the Strait of Hormuz open.
“If geopolitical risks re-emerge, we would caution against the risk that safe-haven dollar-buying comes back into focus,” the Mizuho Bank report said.
The Nikkei 225 stock average continued its rally, breaking 72,000 for the first time and hitting a new record of 72,831.73.
It ended the day up 1.55% and closed at 72,353.96.
Shares of industrial robot maker Fanuc and component supplier Murata Manufacturing rose following reports that the Japanese government plans to channel ¥10.5 trillion of public and private funds into robotics artificial intelligence by fiscal 2040.
