When the Red Sox returned to the clubhouse Wednesday night after their historic 15-game winning streak ended at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles, interim manager Chad Tracy planned to address his players to offer some encouragement.
But upon walking in, he found team veterans Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras were already beating him to the punch.
“When you’re going to as a manager deliver a message and you’ve got your two veteran players already delivering it, that’s a good spot to be in,” Tracy said.
What was that message?
Contreras said he and Gray wanted to make sure their teammates kept their heads up.
“I want everybody to feel proud of what we did,” Contreras said.
“We tied a record since 1946, that’s not easy to do.
We made history.
We played good baseball for two weeks or more and we just lost one game.
Winning and losing is part of the game so I don’t want anybody to feel down, but I want everybody to feel proud.”
Since their last loss on July 1 the Red Sox turned their season around by winning 15 straight games, matching the all-time franchise record set back in 1946.
In doing so the team went from last place and well outside the playoff conversation to holding the third American League Wild Card spot.
Contreras said the club has learned a lot about itself over the past two weeks, including one thing in particular.
“We can beat anybody, that’s lesson No.
1,” Contreras said.
“That was a great ride, 15-game winning streak, there’s nothing to be sad about.
We have to be happy, we should be proud of what we did, and from now on we just have to keep playing the way we’ve been playing lately.”
Tracy noted that even before the win streak began the Red Sox had already started to turn their season around.
Things really changed when the club won five straight to start its last homestand — including a four-game sweep of the Yankees — and though losing the last two games of that stretch left the club with a sour taste, they bounced back and carried that momentum over into the ensuing nine-game road trip to end the first half.
In doing so the club found its identity, Tracy said, and as long as they keep playing that style of baseball they’ll win a lot more games than they’ll lose.
“If we can continue to build on the things that we’ve done in this stretch, and recognize that that’s now our identity then we’ll be in good shape,” Tracy said.
So now that the Red Sox have climbed back into the hunt, what’s the team’s goal now?
“Our mindset is to get to the playoffs,” Contreras said.
“That’s why we play.
We play to reach the playoffs and once we reach the playoffs to go from there, but to get there we have to win as many games as we can.”
