Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday said Israel will strike Iran "whenever necessary" and he won't let Israel's enemies dictate the state's national security strategy. 
In a prerecorded message posted on X and carried by Israeli media outlets, Netanyahu made his first public comments since renewed fighting with Iran erupted Sunday night. 
They also were his first comments since President Donald Trump said Netanyahu would ultimately have to accept whatever peace agreement the U.S. reaches with Iran. 
Netanyahu said Israel's right to self-defense remained unchanged, including in his conversations with Trump. 
"Israel has every right to self-defense, and we will exercise that right whenever necessary," the prime minister said, according to a transcript released by his office. 
"I say this to you, dear citizens of Israel, just as I say it with appreciation and respect in my good conversations with my friend President Trump." 
Iran on Sunday fired missiles into Israel, marking the first time Tehran attacked the country since the fragile ceasefire with the U.S. began April 7. 
Tension mounted after Israel entered a buffer zone along the Lebanon border to target Iranian-backed Hezbollah terrorists, according to Israeli officials. 
Israel had agreed to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire with Lebanon. 
"With unity, determination, and wisdom, we will defend the state of Israel, and with God's help, we will restore security to the north," Netanyahu said. 
He confirmed that military action against Iran had been halted "for now," while warning that Israel would respond "with force" if Tehran attacked again. 
"At present, the fire on this front has been halted, because after the terrorist regime in Tehran was struck, it stopped attacking us," Netanyahu said. 
"If that terrorist regime in Iran makes the mistake of attacking us again, we will respond with force." 
Earlier Monday, Netanyahu spoke with Trump. 
After the call, a senior Israeli official confirmed to Ynet Global that "at Trump's request, we are stopping the strikes in Iran." 
Earlier, Trump posted on Truth Social that "Israel and Iran must stop shooting immediately." 
In a later post, Trump wrote that "both sides, Israel and Iran, want an immediate ceasefire" and said final negotiations on "peace" were moving forward, provided "ignorance or stupidity" did not get in the way. 
An Israeli source familiar with the situation told Ynet that Israel had wanted to strike Iran as early as Thursday, but Trump pressed for the attack not to proceed and the plan was shelved.
