Our next guest is the Latin America deputy regional director at the
International Rescue Committee, Katie Sussman.
Katie, thank you so much for joining us tonight and taking the time.
I know you are very busy right now.
We heard in Victor's piece that thousands in Venezuela remain missing and at least a thousand people have been found dead.
The IRC has launched an emergency response in wake of the quakes.
How are you assessing the situation on the ground?
>> Thank you so much.
Well, we are always looking for the most acute humanitarian needs in in the moment.
Right now, we know that people need to find their loved ones.
They need to receive shelter, food, medical supplies immediately.
And and we also know that the numbers are only a small part of the story right now.
We know numbers of displaced persons are are likely much higher.
Numbers of injuries are higher and there are some things we don't have the full gravity of the situation yet and and are preparing to
be able to respond to people's most acute needs now and make sure that they're safe and healthy in the place they are.
>> Yeah, such a devastating situation there in Venezuela and we know a lot of businesses, especially in Miami, have come together to try and send aid and support there to Venezuela.
We know that US aid began arriving today
and the military is now also there on a humanitarian mission.
Is the IRC collaborating with the federal government at all at this point?
>> So, IRC is collaborating with many different members of the international community.
We are obviously communicating with US government counterparts within the region, also communicating and in stretch collaboration with civil society, local NGOs, the diaspora, you know, it's it's definitely a joint effort right now.
And we are um, interested in ensuring that the international community, including the US government, does um, stand up because after these past few years with the the amount of cuts that there have been to humanitarian aid within Venezuela and starting at just 20% of funding um, covering all of the needs that existed before, we know that now the needs are more than ever and we need to to stand up as a international community to be able to support them.
>> We would imagine that those cuts have
impacted a recovery efforts, especially in this situation now, right?
>> Absolutely.
Um, the the whole infrastructure of Venezuela, including social services, public services, energy, um, medical supplies, etc. was already uh, quite debilitated
um, when we saw the reduction in in funding and support um, by the international community and US government in the past year or so, we uh, did see the the huge impact on um, organizations within Venezuela, communities, 35 plus municipalities lost services um, and there was downsizing of 20 plus national international organizations. So, we know that we're already starting at a much lower point than perhaps we were 3 years ago in terms of support.
>> Katie, thank you very much. Katie Susman, Latin America Deputy Regional Director at the International Rescue Committee. Thank Thank you very much.
