New TikTok documentary digs into notorious deepfake pornography website 89%

Now, journalist Laurie Siegel is sounding the alarm on one website that became ground zero for this abuse.

>> Siegel, a long-time tech reporter and founder of Mostly Human Media, says she first discovered the website Mr. Deepfakes in 2022.
At its height, the platform drew millions of visitors a month, hosting AI generated fake pornography in forums where users could allegedly request explicit videos of women and learn how to make them.
>> So, I looked at Mr. Deepfakes as essentially a training ground for a new type of digital AI generated abuse.
Like, I wanted to find like the man behind it had been anonymous for 6 years.
>> Laurie's years-long investigation caught the attention of Paris Hilton and instead of producing a standard documentary, it was released this week in a novel format where a new generation can watch it, a 14-part vertical series on Hilton's TikTok.

>> The series racking up millions of views.
>> She isn't someone who just put her face on this. She became actively involved in this.
>> With some commenters writing, "This is unreal. Been binge-watching with my teenage girls and their friends."
Another writing, "Let's make this world better for us and our daughters."
>> The comments are just incredible. It's people sharing their own deep fake abuse stories.
>> Hilton became one of the most famous victims of non-consensual pornography after a real private video was leaked in 2004 when she was just 19. She's now one of the loudest voices pushing for stronger protections against AI-generated abuse.
>> Deepfake pornography has become an epidemic.
>> Earlier this year, Hilton joined lawmakers on Capitol Hill advocating for the bipartisan Defiance Act, legislation designed to give victims of non-consensual AI-generated sexual imagery more legal recourse.
>> I know today that there are over 100,000 explicit deepfake images of me made by AI. 100,000 circulating the internet.
>> Lawmakers are responding with things like the Take It Down Act, which requires platforms, at the request of victims, to remove intimate content posted online without consent.
But researchers from the Oxford Internet Institute say more than 35,000 tools are available on the internet to create deepfakes. And nearly one in eight teens personally knows someone targeted by deepfake nudes, according to a nonprofit that builds technology to defend children from sexual abuse.
Siegel believes she found Mr. Deepfakes. She confronts him in her series. He wouldn't respond, nor has he spoken out publicly elsewhere.

>> Mr. Deepfakes' website was shut down last year amid mounting public and legal pressure, in part because of Siegel's work and other ongoing investigations.
NBC was unable to reach him for comment.
To date, he hasn't faced any legal consequences. But it's not just about one website.
>> Paris is a mom. I'm now a mom. This might have been a search for an underground anonymous operator who was doing bad things online. But this was actually just fighting for a better reality for our children.
