Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White sure hasn't been covering herself in glory lately.
First, she failed to defend Sophie Cunningham, one of her star players both on and off the court, after Cunningham came under fire from the Left for saying she felt called to help protect girl athletes.
As a reminder, this was White's response to being questioned about biological men playing in women's sports at a post-game press conference last weekend  an obvious chance for the coach to throw her player a little support.
Instead, she played dumb.
She took the coward's way out, while her player was left taking incoming from inside and outside of the WNBA.
White utterly failed again Saturday when she tried to explain away the brutal clotheslining of Cunningham by DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky.
Instead of taking Carrington to task for her violent behavior, the coach actually defended her, saying it was a "hard foul" and that she didn't think Carrington "intentionally" went for Cunningham's neck.
With friends like these, right?
And THIS wasn't intentional?
Not that Cunningham can't defend herself, of course, but it would be nice to see the Fever coach be a little more supportive of her player and not excuse dangerous play.
There's talk on social media that White's just trying to de-escalate things on and off the court with her weak sauce responses, but that ship sailed a long time ago.
At some point, de-escalation starts looking a whole lot like refusing to stand up for your own players.
Cunningham has shown she can handle the heat just fine, but she shouldn't have to wonder whether her own coach will have her back when things get ugly.
Stephanie White has now had two very public opportunities to show some spine where Sophie Cunningham is concerned  and she's whiffed on both.
