Law enforcement agencies and several cities in Marion and Polk counties canceled National Night Out events Aug. 4 due to widespread wildfire smoke in the Mid-Valley.
The Marion County Sheriff's Office said in a social media post that chose to pull out of multiple events over staff safety concerns.
"We appreciate the invites and regret we won't be able to attend," the agency said.
"To those still attending, we hope you stay safe and have fun."
The National Weather Service is encouraging people experiencing smoke to stay indoors, keep windows closed, avoid exertion outside and wear a respirator if you do go outdoors.
Smoke can damage your lungs and cause toxic pollutants to get into your bloodstream.
Air quality in much of Marion and Polk Counties is at unhealthy levels, registering a 177 on the air quality index as of 4:30 p.m.
Anything above 150 is considered unhealthy.
