Two days after Corey Ruiz was shot and killed during an encounter with Madison police, emotions, questions and unsolved circumstances surrounding the shooting have caused tension in Wisconsin's state capital.
Madison Police Chief John Patterson said at a news conference multiple officers attempted to arrest Ruiz, who was suspected of stealing bicycles and trying to enter unlocked vehicles.
When officers approached him July 22 at the intersection of Williamson and South Baldwin streets, Ruiz drew a knife and injured an officer, who then fired their weapon, Patterson said.
On July 24, attorney Ben Crump held a press conference with the Ruiz family in Madison, who spoke publicly for the first time since the incident.
The family tearfully remembered Ruiz while criticizing the Madison Police Department.
"People, whoever is saying, 'Oh, but he was a criminal.'
So what?
He had a family.
He had me," said Kah'liyah Aliomar, Corey's 13-year-old daughter.
Kah'liyah Aliomar said she cried and didn't know what to say after learning her father had been shot and killed.
She said she was heartbroken knowing she would never see him again.
"I would never in a million years think that I would see my father on a shirt, a pin, a necklace, on social media, saying he was shot and killed by a police officer," Kah'liyah Aliomar said.
"Put yourself in my shoes.
What would you do knowing you just turned 13 last month and that you're about to go into a whole new level of school knowing that your dad is dead?"
Elsa Ruiz, Corey's mother, became emotional while speaking about her son.
"My son was an exceptional guy.
He was my love.
He loved his daughter.
He loved his family.
He did not deserve to be taken out like that.
They took my baby from me," Elsa Ruiz said.
Ruiz's sister, Veronica Ruiz, traveled overnight from Houston after learning her brother had died.
She defended him after his criminal record became public following the shooting.
"There's already been so much negativity about him, and nobody even knows who he is," Veronica Ruiz said.
"His criminal record becomes a tale of trauma, of pain, of struggle.
It does not define who my brother was."
Adam Ruiz, Corey's brother, said watching the video of his brother's death left him devastated.
He remembered Corey as a musician who enjoyed roofing and wanted to spend more time with his daughter.
"My heart is broken.
My family and I will never be the same," Adam Ruiz said.
Crump, who is representing the Ruiz family, said the officers' actions shown in videos of the shooting were unjustified and called for accountability.
"He may not have been perfect, but he was her son.
He was a brother.
He was her dad.
And you didn't have a right to execute him like you did," Crump said.
Crump called for criminal accountability, arguing the officer's use of deadly force was unjustified and should be thoroughly investigated.
"Justice for Corey" was chanted by protesters throughout the press conference.
State Rep.
Shelia Stubbs, who represents Wisconsin's 78th Assembly District, also spoke during the press conference.
She offered her condolences to the Ruiz family and said more work remains to improve police accountability and relationships between law enforcement and communities of color.
"Work still has to be done with our communities, and we must continue to seek justice because justice is needed right now," Stubbs said.
Williamson Street remains closed after fatal shooting
Williamson Street remains closed until further notice due to "ongoing public gathering" three days after police shot and killed Corey Ruiz, 38, according to a City of Madison news release.
Videos of the shooting circulated online, prompting scrutiny from the public, community leaders and some Wisconsin politicians.
Protests started at the scene within hours and community vigils were held.
A July 23 vigil 24 hours after Ruiz's death prompted more crowds to the scene.
The street closure from "just east of the Willy Street Co-op Driveway" to the South Dickinson Street intersection will remain in place.
