It turns out that the Yankees are making their biggest splash after the trade deadline, as they are calling up top prospect George Lombard Jr. and demoting Anthony Volpe in hopes of generating a spark for the stretch run.
The 21-year-old shortstop started the 2026 season in Double-A, but was quickly promoted to Triple-A in late April, where he batted .268 with an .845 OPS and six home runs across 56 games.
He recently overcame two sprained fingers that sidelined him for a month and has been feeling it at the plate since, batting .377 with a 1.081 OPS in his last 14 games.
Lombard's bat was believed to be the final intangible the Yankees needed to see improvement on before getting the call to the big leagues.
His defense has long been considered ready for the show.
General Brian Cashman made it clear that he was looking for a boost at shortstop before the trade deadline after Volpe once again fell woefully short of expectations following his late-season debut after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery.
Once considered the franchise shortstop of the future, the 25-year-old is batting .240 with a .646 OPS while splitting time at the position with Jose Caballero.
He has also committed four errors in 56 games after leading the league with 19 last season.
"We engaged everybody," Cashman said.
"We tried to evaluate all opportunities in the marketplace.
And, with that being said, I don't think there were a lot of opportunities that existed that were upgrades for us.
We like the players we have, and we like the players we have on the [way]."
Yankees brass will hope that Lombard can be the difference-maker that many believe him to be after an underwhelming trade deadline.
In desperate need of a catcher and bullpen help, Cashman acquired Washington Nationals slugger Luis Garcia Jr. and San Francisco Giants outfielder Heliot Ramos.
Garcia will platoon at first base and DH with Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt, while Ramos provides New York with a right-handed bat it had been looking for.
