Bosnia-Herzegovina game vs.
Canada ends in draw as fans cheer in Bevo Mill
Bosnian Americans in St.
Louis had their eyes glued to the World Cup on Friday as the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team took on Canada.
Bosnia fought Canada to a 1-1 draw, earning a point on Canada’s home turf in Toronto.
Canada bagged its first World Cup point with the tie.
Even before the game began, hundreds of fans packed Bevo Caffe Lounge in south St.
Louis.
Bosnian National Team supporters crammed shoulder-to-shoulder and wall-to-wall to watch the TV screen, creating a sea of bright blue jerseys.
St.
Louis welcomed thousands of Bosnians during the Bosnian war and has one of the largest expatriate populations outside Europe.
Fan groups were multigenerational  many brought their kids, also decked out in Bosnia gear.
“Bosnians are always told to stick together with your family, your cousins,” said Erman Jeger Suljic, who left Bosnia in 1996 when he was a kid.
“We have a lot of hospitality, you know.
You come into our house, it's not, 'Hey, do you have water?
The water's on the table.'”.
Even those who couldn’t stop at the watch party honked their horns and waved Bosnian flags out car windows as they drove down Gravois Avenue in Bevo Mill, where many refugees initially settled when they came to the city.
“We just love our country, no doubt about it,” said Anri Elijazovic, who left Bosnia in 1996.
“You know, there are about 60,000 to 80,000 Bosnians here in St.
Louis, we have the largest community probably in the world, you know.
I just think we do everything for our country.
It doesn’t matter how long you are here.”
This year marks the Balkan country’s second appearance in the World Cup; its first was 12 years ago, in Brazil.
Earlier this month, fans were able to watch the players at Energizer Stadium during a friendly pretournament match against Panama.
While the crowd was loud, everyone was locked in, gasping and cheering with every punt and roll of the ball.
While the fans had many chants memorized, the most popular was “Volim te Bosno,” which translates to “Bosnia, I love you!”
Bosnia scored during the first half, and the crowd roared for a good minute and a half.
“It was amazing, everyone jumping, getting excited,” Hamka said.
Bosnia is slated to take on Switzerland next Thursday.
