President Donald Trump defended his administration's agreement with Iran, arguing that the accord amounts to an "unconditional surrender" by Tehran and saying the Islamic Republic has effectively undergone a form of regime change following the recent conflict. 
In an interview with Axios, Trump pushed back against critics who contend the agreement falls short of his earlier demands for Iran's unconditional surrender. 
"Well, it really probably is unconditional surrender," Trump said. 
Trump argued that Iran's military capabilities have been severely degraded and that Tehran is now negotiating from a position of weakness. 
"They have no military," he said. 
"The entire military is gone." 
The president also suggested that Iran's political leadership has been fundamentally altered by the conflict. 
"I actually think it's regime change," Trump said, arguing that successive layers of leadership had been removed and replaced. 
Trump said the agreement ensures Iran will not obtain a nuclear weapon and portrayed the outcome as a major strategic victory for the United States and its allies. 
He also credited several countries with helping facilitate communications during the negotiations, including Pakistan, whose government has publicly said it continues to play a mediating role between Washington and Tehran. 
The agreement remains controversial among some Republicans and foreign policy analysts, who have questioned whether Tehran will fully comply with its commitments. 
Trump, however, expressed confidence in the arrangement and dismissed calls for additional military escalation.
