At least 8 people were injured in a shooting, including four children, in Brooklyn's Coney Island, New York late on July 4th, police said.
The NYPD told CBS News a 21-year-old woman is in critical condition after being shot in the chest while the remaining are in a stable condition.
Four of the injured were children, whose ages range from 6 to 14, the youngest of whom was shot in the stomach, the NYPD said early Sunday.
A 7-year-old boy was shot in both legs, a 12-year-old boy was shot in the leg and a 14-year-old boy was shot in the thigh, according to police.
NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a news briefing Sunday morning that officers responded to the call around 10:35 p.m.
Tisch said an unknown man dressed in black and wearing a black ski mask approached and fired multiple rounds on a family barbecue.
Tisch said there is no indication that an argument or altercation took place before the shooting.
Tisch said police believe there is no threat to the public at this time.
A gang-related homicide took place on the same block earlier this week, Tisch said, and police are investigating if there is a link between the two incidents.
Police said a firearm was recovered at the scene and no arrests have yet been made, but the investigation is ongoing.
"There is no place for this kind of violence in city," said Mayor Zohran Mamdani in the news briefing.
"We will not tolerate it and we will fight it with every tool at our disposal.
As we mourn alongside those whose loved ones have been hurt, let us also recommit ourselves to the work of building a city where every celebration is safe and every holiday is joyful."
