A juvenile humpback whale washed ashore and became lodged beneath a dock in Winthrop on Wednesday, prompting an investigation by marine rescue officials.
Whale and Dolphin Conservation of North America (WDC-NA) said its marine animal rescue team responded to the scene after the 30-foot-long, 35,000-pound whale became stranded under a private dock off Washington Avenue during high tide.
According to The Boston Globe, the whale was first reported around 12:30 p.m., and WDC-NA responders arrived later that evening, along with the Massachusetts Environmental Police and the Winthrop Harbormaster.
The whale has not yet been identified, and its cause of death remains unknown.
“We are heartbroken at the loss of this young animal,” Lauren Brandkamp, WDC-NA's stranding coordinator, said in a statement.
“We are currently working with federal, state, municipal, tribal liaison, and community partners to determine a course of action for this whale.
The more information we can discover through internal and external examinations, the better we can advocate for policies to protect these animals and their ocean home.”
WDC-NA said photographs of the whale have been submitted to the Gulf of Maine Humpback Whale Catalog, maintained by the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown, in an effort to identify the animal.
Officials were also working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to find a location to move the whale and perform a necropsy, which they said could take several days.
Wednesday's incident marks the first large whale stranding in Massachusetts this year, according to the Globe.
While there were no major whale strandings in the state last year, officials responded to six in 2024.
WDC-NA reports that since 2016, NOAA has declared several “unusual mortality events” for humpback whales, minke whales, and critically endangered North Atlantic right whales along the East Coast because of an increase in strandings.
Experts say that fishing gear entanglement, vessel strikes, and infectious disease are among the leading causes of death.
WDC-NA officials said federal funding has been essential to marine mammal rescue efforts but warned that recent funding issues have made that difficult.
“The federal funding freezes and delays in funding opportunities we have experienced in the past year do not stop whales from stranding, but they do disrupt our ability to respond,” Regina Asmutis-Silvia, executive director of WDC-NA, said in a statement.
The organization responds to stranded marine mammals along more than 300 miles of Massachusetts coastline, from Plymouth to Revere, through NOAA's Greater Atlantic Regional Marine Mammal Stranding Network.
WDC-NA said it was in touch with members of the Wampanoag Tribes to acknowledge the whale's death, as the animals hold deep cultural significance for many Indigenous communities.
“WDC reached out to members of the Wampanoag Tribes in acknowledgment that this whale represents a loss to their family, and we offer our sincerest sympathies to them,” the group said in a statement.
