St.
Louis Public Schools officials announced Wednesday that employees are expected to return to the district’s downtown headquarters on July 6, after environmental testing found no detectable Legionella bacteria in the building’s drinking water system.
The central office on North 11th Street has been closed since June 5, when testing revealed Legionella in the system.
SLPS officials initially said testing for Legionella bacteria began after “water intrusion and a plumbing incident” in the district’s offices.
But officials said days later that testing of its water systems actually began after a district employee was diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia that can be treated with antibiotics but can become deadly without early medical intervention.
In a news release Wednesday, a district spokesperson said “independent culture-based testing found no detectable Legionella bacteria” in drinking water samples collected from the building.
Crews also tested the building’s cooling tower treatment tank, where they identified “very low concentrations of Legionella, well below established guidance thresholds and consistent with a properly maintained and controlled system.”
SLPS officials said that, based on the test results, and after consulting with environmental and facilities professionals, they are preparing for employees to return to the building.
The district said it is taking the following steps to make sure employees are safe:
Replacement of the cooling tower treatment tank.
Continued monitoring and testing of water systems.
Preventive flushing and maintenance of water lines and fixtures.
Roof replacement and related construction work.
Flooring replacement in designated areas.
Deep cleaning and sanitization of workspaces.
Final inspections of building systems and indoor air quality.
Legionella bacteria occur naturally in lakes and rivers.
The bacteria can become dangerous when they invade water systems, where they proliferate in warm, slow-moving water.
The disease cannot be passed through human-to-human contact.
Most people who contract the disease get it from inhaling water droplets from water fountains, sinks and showers.
