For nearly two decades, the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor has remained the benchmark for air superiority. 
Designed to dominate enemy fighters before they even know it’s there, the aircraft combines stealth, speed, agility, and advanced sensors in a way few operational fighters have matched. 
Although newer aircraft such as the F-35 Lightning II, China’s J-20 Mighty Dragon, and Russia’s Su-57 Felon have entered service, many continue to regard the F-22 as the world’s premier dedicated air-superiority fighter. 
Interestingly, it is also among the most expensive operational fighter aircraft ever built. 
This is a consequence of its cutting-edge technology, limited production run, and ambitious development program. 
Born out of the Cold War 
The F-22 traces its origins to the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program launched by the U.S. 
Air Force during the 1980s. 
At the height of the Cold War, American planners sought a successor to the F-15 Eagle that could defeat emerging Soviet fighters while surviving increasingly sophisticated air defense systems. 
Lockheed’s YF-22 ultimately defeated Northrop’s YF-23 prototype and entered full-scale development. 
Although the Soviet Union collapsed before the aircraft reached operational service, the Raptor entered the U.S. 
Air Force in 2005, bringing together technologies that were years ahead of their time. 
Rather than being optimized for ground attack, the aircraft was built with one mission above all else: establishing and maintaining control of the skies. 
What makes the F-22 so effective? 
The Raptor’s strength lies not in a single capability but in how several advanced technologies complement one another. 
Perhaps its most famous feature is stealth. 
Unlike conventional fighters carrying missiles beneath their wings, the F-22 stores its weapons inside internal bays, significantly reducing its radar signature. 
Combined with carefully shaped surfaces and radar-absorbing materials, this makes the aircraft extremely difficult to detect and track, allowing it to engage hostile aircraft before being spotted itself. 
Equally important is its ability to supercruise. 
While most fighter aircraft require fuel-hungry afterburners to exceed the speed of sound, the F-22 can cruise at supersonic speeds of around Mach 1.5 without using them. 
This extends operational range, reduces infrared emissions, and allows the aircraft to reach combat areas more quickly while conserving fuel. 
The Raptor is also one of the few operational fighters equipped with two-dimensional thrust-vectoring nozzles. 
By directing engine exhaust, the aircraft can perform extreme maneuvers even when aerodynamic control surfaces become less effective at high angles of attack. 
This gives the F-22 a decisive advantage in close-range aerial combat should a dogfight become unavoidable. 
Another revolutionary feature is its sensor fusion. 
Instead of overwhelming pilots with information from multiple sensors, the aircraft combines data from its radar, electronic support systems, and other onboard sensors into a single tactical picture. 
Today this capability is expected in modern fifth-generation fighters, but when the F-22 was designed, it represented a major leap in combat aviation. 
Why is the F-22 so expensive? 
The Raptor’s reputation as one of the world’s most expensive fighter aircraft stems from more than just its advanced technology. 
Only 187 operational F-22s were ultimately produced after the U.S. government curtailed the program in 2009, with production ending in 2011. 
Because billions of dollars in research and development were spread across a relatively small fleet, the overall cost per aircraft increased dramatically. 
Its sophisticated stealth coatings, advanced avionics, powerful AN/APG-77 AESA radar, and highly integrated mission systems also contributed to its price. 
Depending on how costs are calculated, the total program cost per aircraft exceeds US$300 million , making it one of the costliest operational fighter programs ever fielded. 
Why no other country can buy one 
Unlike the F-35, the F-22 has never been exported. 
The primary reason is the Obey Amendment, legislation passed by the U.S. 
Congress that prohibited the export of the aircraft to protect its highly classified technologies. 
American officials were concerned that the Raptor’s stealth design, electronic warfare capabilities, advanced radar, and mission software could be compromised or reverse-engineered if the aircraft were sold overseas. 
Even close allies including Japan, Australia, and Israel expressed interest in acquiring the fighter but were unable to do so. 
As a result, the F-22 remains exclusive to the U.S. 
Air Force, making it one of the rarest fifth-generation fighters in operational service. 
A fighter that still shapes modern air combat 
Although production ended more than a decade ago, the F-22 continues to influence the design philosophy of newer combat aircraft. 
Its combination of stealth, super cruise, supermaneuvrability, and sensor fusion helped define what is now expected of a fifth-generation fighter. 
While sixth-generation programs such as the U.S. 
Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) initiative are expected to eventually replace it, the Raptor remains a cornerstone of American air superiority. 
Nearly twenty years after entering operational service, it continues to be regarded as one of the most capable and formidable fighter aircraft ever built.
