Argentina’s World Cup campaign ended in chaotic fashion after midfielder Leandro Paredes appeared to grab Spain defender Eric García by the throat moments after the final whistle, sparking a mass confrontation following Spain’s extra-time victory in the final.
Tempers flared seconds after the final whistle as Spain sealed a 1-0 win in New Jersey thanks to Ferran Torres’ goal in the 106th minute, with players, substitutes and coaching staff from both sides becoming embroiled in a heated melee as celebrations gave way to disorder.
The incident appeared to come after Argentina defender Nahuel Molina appeared to swing a punch at Spain captain Rodri as Spanish players celebrated.

- Match of the Day (@BBCMOTD) July 19, 2026
Rodri confronted Molina after the apparent swing, and Molina responded by bumping him in the chest, sparking a wider melee.
Spain’s Garcia stepped in, prompting Argentina’s Paredes to rush over and jab Garcia in the throat while Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni tried to separate the players.
As the scuffle spread, Paredes then turned to Spain midfielder Gavi , who was already grappling with Argentine Thiago Almada .
Paredes spun the 21-year-old to the ground and appeared to shove him in the face before Spain striker Borja Iglesias and other teammates intervened to pull players apart.
Paredes was reportedly sent off the pitch, despite the match having finished.
The incident followed an increasingly ill-tempered contest in which Argentina finished the game with just 10 men after Enzo Fernández was shown a straight red card in the 90th minute for a foul on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí .
Scaloni’s side also collected six yellow cards during a bruising final.
Despite the disorder, several players from both teams exchanged embraces after calm was restored.
Spain players, including Yamine Yamal , comforted tearful Argentina icon Lionel Messi and embraced him.
Speaking after the match, Scaloni urged his players to accept defeat with dignity.
“We are gracious in victory, and we must be so in defeat,” he said.
“We accept the loss; we gave everything.
We were stretched thin coming into this, but giving it your all like they did today sets a great example for our people and our country.
“You lose, and you have to pick yourself up again,” he added.
The ugly scenes came as Spain secured its second men’s World Cup title and ended Argentina’s reign as world champions.
They also capped what is widely expected to be 39-year-old Messi’s final appearance on the World Cup stage.
