Two Pasadena Demonstrations Set for Saturday Over ICE Shootings of Immigrant Workers Across U.S. 8%

Walnut St.
Both actions center on the deaths of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican national shot in Houston on July 7, and Johan Sebastian Durán Guerrero, a 25-year-old man from Colombia shot in Biddeford, Maine, on July 13.
The two shootings occurred six days apart.
The organizations describe their events as part of a national day of action.
The National Day Laborer Organizing Network’s release describes Saturday’s Home Depot gathering as a vigil and community gathering demanding justice for both men and for others who have died as a result of what the group calls ICE brutality.
The release says day laborers, immigrant workers, faith leaders and immigrant rights advocates will attend, and lists candles, flowers and memorial displays among the expected visuals.
NDLON’s political director Erika Andiola said that the killings prove no one is safe and called for an end to what she describes as ICE’s reign of terror.
The release closes with the phrases "ICE out of our communities" and "Solo el Pueblo salva al Pueblo."
San Gabriel Foothills Indivisible says it has held a protest at Colorado and Fair Oaks every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and that Saturday’s event folds that standing demonstration into the national day of action.
That schedule is the group’s own description and has not been independently documented.
The group is directing participants to sign up through a Mobilize page and asks them to bring signs.
Home Depot stores and their parking lots are ordinarily private property.
Whether the company authorized, tolerated or objected to a vigil at its East Walnut Street location, and whether NDLON obtained any City of Pasadena permit, could not be determined.
In a statement after a separate Home Depot protest in the Westlake area of Los Angeles, the company said it does not coordinate with ICE and cannot legally interfere with federal enforcement activity at its stores.
That statement was not made in reference to the Pasadena vigil.
The Pasadena Police Department’s posture toward either event, and whether any street closures are planned at Colorado and Fair Oaks, could not be confirmed.
An earlier NDLON release condemned an ICE operation near Orange Grove and Los Robles in Pasadena that the group said resulted in the detention of six immigrant workers, and which the release said involved a school lockdown.
No other recent ICE enforcement activity in Pasadena or Altadena has been documented.
No comment specific to the Pasadena demonstrations was available from ICE’s Los Angeles field office or the DHS press office in published reporting.
Pasadena’s mayor, members of the City Council and Rep.
Judy Chu have not publicly commented on the two deaths or on Saturday’s events in available reporting.
Attendance figures, and whether either demonstration draws counter-protesters or results in arrests, will not be known until the events take place.
Salgado Araujo was shot by an ICE officer during a vehicle stop in Houston’s Magnolia Park area at about 6:50 a.m. on July 7, part of what the Department of Homeland Security described as a targeted enforcement operation aimed at arresting another person.
He was driving a work crew to a construction site at the time and was not in custody.
DHS and ICE said Salgado Araujo rammed an ICE vehicle, ignored verbal commands and attempted to run over an officer, and that the officer fired in self-defense.
The officer’s name has not been publicly released.
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences determined he died of a penetrating gunshot wound of the torso and ruled the manner of death a homicide.
Two federal agencies are examining the case, on different questions.
The DHS Office of Inspector General is reviewing the shooting itself.
The FBI’s Houston office is investigating an alleged assault on a federal officer — that is, Salgado Araujo’s conduct during the stop.
Available reporting does not describe a separate criminal investigation by the Houston Police Department or the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, and there is no public record of a Harris County District Attorney charging review.
Durán Guerrero was shot on July 13 near the intersection of Pool and Hill streets in Biddeford, in York County, Maine.
DHS and ICE said an officer discharged his weapon during an enforcement action after Durán Guerrero attempted to flee the scene in his vehicle, with the officer citing fear for public safety.
Advocates and news accounts describe the encounter as a traffic stop that occurred while he was on his way to work delivering goods.
Like Salgado Araujo, he was not in detention or formal custody.
Under Maine law, the state attorney general’s office reviews all law-enforcement-involved deaths.
Officials have said state and federal investigations are underway, but the attorney general has not released findings.
No medical examiner ruling in the Maine case has been made public.
Salgado Araujo’s son and other family members have spoken publicly, held public visitations and called for an independent investigation, describing him as a hardworking father and homebuilder.
Durán Guerrero is survived by his partner, a 3-year-old daughter and a sister.
His partner and family have given on-camera interviews.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has commented publicly on Durán Guerrero’s death.
No civil lawsuit, Federal Tort Claims Act filing or congressional inquiry naming either death has been documented.
