Nationwide search for new president of MUSC begins with first meeting ⁠5%

The nationwide search for the next president of the Medical University of South Carolina is underway. 
The Presidential Search Committee met July 28 via videoconference to kick off the process of replacing Dr. 
David J. 
Cole, who is stepping down this fiscal year after 13 years of leading MUSC. 
Cole, a practicing surgical oncologist, will continue to see patients and teach at the school. 
Sarah Brooks of the global search firm Russell Reynolds Associates joined the board and introduced herself and another employee before the board voted to go into executive session. 
Brooks "leads the Academic Health Practice" at the firm, according to her profile on the company's website. 
After more than an hour in executive session, the committee reconvened just long enough to adjourn. 
There did not appear to be any other public votes taken by the committee while the press was allowed to be in the meeting, including one to hire the search firm. 
The committee is chaired by Dr. 
James Lemon, an MUSC board member and former chair. 
When it announced Cole would leave the post, MUSC said the search was expected to last until next spring. 
Cole's current contract runs through the end of the fiscal year, June 30, 2027. 
He has been with the university since 1994. 
Under his leadership, MUSC began acquiring struggling community hospital across the Palmetto State in what now forms a statewide network of 18 hospitals. 
With primary care and telehealth, MUSC Health has more than 1,000 care sites across the state. 
There are five more hospitals in the planning or development stage, including a proposed $1 billion cancer hospital that is part of MUSC Hollings Cancer Center's push to become a top-tier National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center. 
It is a move Cole has fully supported. 
Also underway is a new hospital in the busy Nexton corridor, where a 70-bed facility is planned, as well as a large multi-specialty medical office building.
