Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows has announced she’ll be entering the campaign to be the Democratic nominee to face Sen. 
Susan Collins in November. 
In an announcement Thursday on Facebook , Bellows described her candidacy as part of a movement that Mainers have been building for some time. 
She highlighted her history of tough fights, “from fighting for marriage equality at the ACLU to protecting Mainers’ voter data from Donald Trump’s Department of Justice. 
That’s what I will do again in this campaign.” 
Bellows joins former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson , who announced earlier this week, and several others. 
The sudden departure of Graham Platner from the race earlier this week after a credible allegation of sexual assault surfaced against him in the media left a space open that the Maine Democratic Party must fill by Monday, July 27. 
The party plans to hold a nominating convention, and in a statement, party chairs said they would “announce the full timeline, details for how the nomination process will move forward, information about how to participate, and requirements for candidates soon. 
We will keep the public informed throughout the process – transparency is of the utmost importance.” 
Among other candidates, Bellows and Jackson will be facing former Maine CDC Director Nirav Shah. 
Other candidates include 2nd Congressional District primary candidates Jordan Wood and Paige Loud, Maine Rep. 
Valli Geiger of Rockland, Dan Kleban, and David Costello, a former government official who ran against Platner in the U.S. 
Senate primary.
