A new mural with local symbols and bright colors is complete and ready for Instagram in Rosslyn.
Beneath an elevated walkway at 1101 Wilson Blvd, the 2,631-square-foot mural has been up since May and underwent final touch-ups two weeks ago, its designers told ARLnow.
Spanning two columns and a wall, the permanent art feature draws on local symbols such as the northern cardinal (Virginia’s state bird), dogwood blossoms (Virginia’s state flower), the Metro grid and Memorial Bridge.
Designers Jeff Bade and Amy Esser of Exiles Creative Group said providing a photo opportunity was an explicit goal.
“I was really very obsessed with having a cherry blossom low down — where you’re at street level,” Esser told ARLnow.
“I wanted to make sure if people wanted to take selfies that they’d have a good background.”
The effort seems to be paying off.
“Every time I go there, I see people taking pictures of it,” Bade said.
“If people are taking a picture of your artwork to show other people or place on their social media, that’s flattering.”
The mural was commissioned by the real estate investment firm Beacon Capital Partners, which owns The Towers, two nearby office buildings at 1100 and 1101 Wilson Blvd.
Exiles began designing this mural last November.
Rather than hand-painting the art, the team designed it digitally using Adobe software and printed it onto large adhesive vinyl panels that were heat-pressed to the wall.
Bade and Esser said there are a few hidden references in the mural, such as Metro ceiling tiles and certain viewing angles that create “V” and “A” shapes.
Exiles Creative Group launched in May 2025.
So far, it has mostly specialized in rebrands and web design, but the team hopes to create more murals in this area.
“Public art creates a sense of community and creates a unique footprint on any area,” Bade said.
“It has personality, and that draws people.
This is a place you can come and sit, and it’s just more visually interesting.”
