For years, people inside and outside the Boston Red Sox organization viewed Marcelo Mayer as the team’s next great shortstop and a cornerstone in the making.
On Monday the Red Sox traded him to the San Francisco Giants for left-handed reliever Erik Miller, ending a years-long saga of injuries, underperforming and general disappointment.
Taken fourth overall in 2021, Mayer was tied for the organization’s second-highest draft selection in franchise history (Mike Garman, third overall in 1967).
But he has not panned out in the majors, where he has a career .223 average and a .625 OPS over 114 career big-league games in the last two seasons.
Injuries cost Mayer months each of his last several minor league seasons, and again after the Red Sox called him up to debut on May 24, 2025.
Mayer has been on the injured list since June with a stress reaction in his left forearm.
But when healthy, Mayer is a capable and versatile defender.
He can play second, third, and shortstop, his natural position.
The underrated Miller was a standout on a struggling San Francisco team, posting a 2.76 ERA with 45 strikeouts and 22 walks in 32 2/3 innings, with similarly strong results against lefties (.600 OPS) and righties (.642 OPS).
His Baseball Savant page is coated in red as he ranks in MLB’s 86th percentile or better in fastball velocity (86th), groundball percentage (92nd), strikeout percentage (95th), whiff percentage (97th), hard-hit percentage and expected batting average (both 98th) and average exit velocity (99th).
It’s a somewhat straightforward swap in terms of club control, as Miller won’t reach free agency until 2030 and Mayer 2032.
The Giants series at Fenway was already circled in the calendar as Rafael Devers’ first return to Boston since the June 2025 trade.
If healthy and active, it will be Mayer’s, too.
