Residents of Orange County have the right to understand the truth behind the allocation of their tax dollars.
They also deserve clarity on who is addressing the county’s essential needs and desires versus those of the residents themselves.
The budget is a moral document, and all the OC budget needs to be transparent and accessible to the public with accurately defined line items instead of strategically hiding expenditures and receivables in misleadingly identified lump sums.
The community has a right to know who gains and who suffers from the county’s financial decisions.
Are the Supervisors feeling the pinch economically after their recent self-imposed raise of approximately $49K, which brings their annual salary to over $244K?
Are county healthcare workers facing hardships due to a lack of raises and insufficient staffing to meet the healthcare needs of residents?
Why is $1.3 million taxpayer money being allocated for a new gym for the OC Sheriff’s Deputies?
Do the other county departments have their own private gym?
Why did the supervisors not question Sheriff Barnes about the necessity of paying over $62 million in sheriff’s overtime in 2025?
Corruption refers to officials characterized by their malicious and strategic neglect, willful silence, and self-serving votes.
Often, political corruption resembles a cabal, as corrupt politicians that can act unlawfully due to their power over staff and county employees.
Despite its long-standing history and increasingly diverse applications, the term “political corruption” is commonly understood as the misuse of public office for personal benefit.
This issue has become particularly apparent with the recent imprisonment of former supervisor Andrew Do.
During the OC Board of Supervisors Budget Hearing on June 9th, 2026, the public was restricted to just one (1) minute to share their comments about the proposed budget.
Chairperson Supervisor Doug Chaffee determined that there were too many attendees who had come to express their views and hold officials accountable.
It appears that the Chair and other supervisors were not interested in hearing the public’s opinions.
Typically, the public is allotted 3 minutes for comments, but on June 9th, Supervisor Chaffee leveraged his authority to ignore and reduce the public’s comments.
Consequently, approximately 160 residents, who took the time to attend the budget hearing, lost 2 minutes of their speaking time.
So, it seems that their recent self-serving $49K salary increase the supervisors awarded themselves wasn’t sufficient for them to work a little overtime and allow the public speakers to take their 3 minutes.
The supervisors obviously do not recognize themselves as public servants; instead, their actions and lack of consideration for the public closely mirror tyranny as the exercise of absolute power by a ruler or small group that governs for its own interests rather than the common good.
It is maintained through fear, coercion, censorship, and the erosion of individual rights, liberties, and the rule of law.
Political corruption negatively impacts everyone in Orange County
When the OC Supervisors prioritize financial gain or other inappropriate benefits, it distorts policy and harms the community.
Essential areas such as healthcare, housing, and infrastructure suffer as public resources are deliberately diverted from the needs of the community, leading to a decline in the quality of services in OC.
The supervisors know that hundreds of people without fixed abode die on the streets throughout Orange County every year.
It’s evident that the supervisors don’t want to recognize and/or prioritize saving the lives of infants, children, disabled, veterans, seniors, and critically ill who are trying to survive living on the streets in Orange County, but they do prioritize funding hundreds of millions on jails, sheriff overtime, and $15 million helicopters.
With the threat of an extra hot summer and potential monsoonal rains due to a strong and growing El Nino, the county has not announced or created any cooling stations, hygiene stations, and/or rain shelters for people without fixed abode but the sheriff deputies are getting a 1.3 million dollar gym and are spending $320 on the county jails from their net County Cost (Discretionary Funds).
In addition to the direct financial impact on Orange County businesses and residents, corruption significantly undermines public trust in government.
When individuals perceive the system as biased against them, many withdraw from civic engagement and refrain from voting, resulting in a government that is less representative and, regrettably, less attuned to community needs.
It is clear that a majority of the Supervisors have consistently favored one of their key campaign donors (Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs union), year after year.
The stark contrast between the $746 million allocated for Public Protection in the county’s budget and the paltry $6.5 million designated for community resources highlights that the Supervisors do not prioritize community needs over Public Protection, the OC Sheriff’s Department, and the jail system.
Essentially, for every $1 spent on Community Services, the Supervisors allocate $114.00 to Public Protection.
Furthermore, the county’s expenditure on housing from discretionary funds is less than $1 million, while over $357 million is directed to the OC Sheriff’s.
When the county requested residents to participate in a survey aimed at identifying community needs and priorities, the public survey results highlighted 1) Community Services, 2) Infrastructure, 3) Public Protection, and 4) Insurance and Reserves.
However, the county seemingly disregarded public input by favoring their own interests, allocating funds that best meet their self-serving campaigns as follows: 1) Public Protection at $746 million, 2) Community Services at $252 million, 3) Infrastructure at $38 million, and 4) Insurance and Reserves.
