The downtown Berkeley bagel scene is slated to welcome a fresh competitor just as students return to the Cal campus for the new school year.
Berkeley Bagels, which has been making bagels out of its Westbrae location for a half century, is set to open a new location on Aug. 17 at 1941 University Ave. (at Bonita Avenue), joining the ranks of other downtown and central Berkeley bagel shops like Cafe Brusco, Lox Stock & Bagel, and Bageltopia.
At the new store, the bagel shop will provide the same classic New York-style bagels and menu as their flagship location on Gilman Street.
The new shop will be in the former location of Dessert N Spice, a halal cupcake shop that opened in 2023.
According to a sign in the business’s window, the shop will be moving to Dera Cafe, a Pakistani fusion cafe in North Berkeley.
Though the store has operated as a bagel shop under different names (some die hard Noshers may remember Boogie Woogie Bagel Boys on the 2017 Nosh Bagel taste test), bagels have been sold out of the Westbrae locations since 1974 using the same recipe and same equipment.
Alex Suon, manager of the Gilman Berkeley Bagels store hopes their new University store will serve the UC Berkeley population and downtown Berkeley neighborhood to bring them “the same great quality bagels, handmade, chewy New York-style bagels.”
“We see a lot of people who have been asking us to expand closer to University towards that side of Berkeley,” said Suon.
New York-style bagels are known for their glossy crust which comes from the boiling process before baking.
All of the bagels for both locations will be kettle-boiled and baked at the flagship Gilman store.
Berkeley Bagels serves an array of bagel sandwiches from a classic bagel with cream cheese to “The Eggy Baggy” which comes with scrambled eggs and an optional slice of meat.
They also sell a variety of open faced bagel melts in the style of pepperoni pizza or hot dogs.
But what customers keep coming back for, Suon said, are the Nova lox.
“It’s so smooth and it’s silky, and it’s not as salty as other lox that you find at other shops because we use very high quality locks and our prices are very competitive for the quality that people receive,” said Suon.
The Nova sliced lox sandwich with cream cheese, tomato, onion is $11.99, a bagel with plain cream cheese is $4.39 and a baker’s dozen comes out to $25.99.
Berkeley Bagels also sells sandwiches, challah, smoothies, boba drinks, Thai iced tea and other cafe favorites.
For the first three months, Berkeley Bagels will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., though if there is demand they will stay open until 4 p.m, according to Suon.
When they found out that Dessert N Spice would be leaving, Berkeley Bagels knew it would be the spot for a second location.
“We saw an opportunity,” said Suon, “and we just took it.”
