Itching for the stage and want to pursue comedy?
Hoping to feel a bit more confident at your next work meeting?
Or maybe you’re just awkward?
If the answer is yes to any of these questions, improv could be for you, according to Kat Brown, co-founder of Provocation Theatre, a three-year-old queer and female-owned community improv theater and training center, which as of January has a home of its own downtown on Bancroft Way.
“In our ethos, we are a queer, femme-forward space,” said Brown, who runs Provocation with her partner, Nat Hunter.
“But we are also super accessible to anybody who just wants to have some fun in their life, do something creative, tell their story and get out of their shells.”
Provocation offers a variety of ways to do so, including group classes, corporate team building workshops and one-on-one training sessions.
The theater also hosts weekend comedy performances from improv troupes across the Bay Area.
And from July 23-26, Provocation will host its second annual Yas!
And…Festival, four days of improv performances, workshops, happy hour mixers, and comedy jam sessions.
This year’s theme: “Bigger, Better, More Gay!”
“We are really trying to cultivate queer joy,” said Brown about the festival.
“It's fun to see people having fun that are traditionally marginalized, and this festival is just a tribute to that.”
Brown has been involved in improv most of her adult life.
Her first job out of college was working at Finest City Improv in her hometown of San Diego.
But after seven years on the job, she was burned out working in the arts and relocated to the Bay Area and began working in design.
“But improv has always been my passion,” she said.
“And it's been the thing I come back to.”
She and Hunter formed Provocation three years ago, operating out of a variety of spots including the Monkey House in Berkeley, before opening the space on Bancroft Way near the UC Berkeley campus.
The pair drew on their design backgrounds to create the space, which is not your typical “dingy comedy club,” according to Brown.
“We call ourselves the ‘boutique improv space’ because it is really cozy,” she said.
“It's really intended to feel like you're coming home.”
Provocation works with 12 different instructors, many of whom have trained in LA and Chicago, both important improv training grounds.
Each teacher brings their distinct style of improv to their classes.
“You have the quieter people, the thoughtful people, the loud and funny,” said Brown.
“You get a full experience when you take a course series with us because you get to train with these different people.”
Drop-in classes cost $35 for those who want to dip their toes in the improv waters.
Six-week classes cost $180, while three-day intensives range from $120-$150.
Provocation also offers custom packages for private groups and one-on-one coaching sessions.
Brown serves as an instructor herself and works with several one-on-one clients, including a tech executive who recently moved into a new outward facing role in her company.
“We’re working on getting her confidence up,” she said.
“Role-playing being a disgruntled customer, being a happy customer, and just getting her more confident with who she is.”
Another client is an 83-year-old woman who has wanted to do improv her entire life.
Sessions take place at the woman’s home.
“And she's probably going to bring her show to the theater and do what we've done in her living room for a crowd,” said Brown.
Brown said Provocation is planning to offer daytime classes for adults that are 65 and up.
“I hear so often someone say, ‘Well, I never thought I could do that,’ or, ‘I never would have done that,’” she said.
“All it takes is the right teacher or the right community member to be like, ‘Come do this thing,’ and then that becomes their lifeline.”
Provocation was founded in the memory of Brown’s father, who died 10 years ago.
Cowboy Jim, as he was known, was a macho car salesman, the “dudest of all dudes,” according to Brown, but he had a real soft spot for the theater.
As a child, Brown used to tag along with him to see high-end performances at the Coronado Playhouse and avant-garde theater put on by students at San Diego State University.
Thinking about him, she couldn’t help but reflect on the meaning of theater in this time of AI slop and doomscrolling.
“The people who love it will always make a place for it,” she said.
And whether it's inside of a theater building, whether it's out in the streets, whether it's online, theater has such a lifeblood.
And there's nothing like a live performance.”
