Hundreds gathered on City Hall Plaza on Thursday for a vigil for Louisa Gag, a Boston bike activist who was killed while cycling to work.
Gag, 34, was struck and killed by a truck on July 16 while riding her bike to her job at the Boston Public Library.
Friends, family and fellow activists remembered Gag as a passionate advocate for safe cycling and a vibrant member of the community.
“Louisa was a force of nature,” said Tiffany Cogell, executive director of the Boston Cyclists Union.
“She was dedicated to making our streets safer for everyone, and her loss is a devastating blow to our movement.”
Mayor Michelle Wu, who spoke at the vigil, expressed her condolences to Gag’s loved ones and vowed to continue working towards a more bike-friendly city.
“Louisa’s death is a tragedy that should never have happened,” Wu said.
“We will honor her memory by redoubling our efforts to create a Boston where everyone can travel safely, regardless of their mode of transportation.”
The vigil featured speakers, a moment of silence, and a bike procession through the city.
Many attendees wore purple, Gag’s favorite color, and carried signs with messages like “Vision Zero” and “Bikes are not a death sentence.”
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Gag’s family with funeral expenses and to support the Boston Cyclists Union’s advocacy efforts.
