Police found remains of several victims along a coastal area near Gilgo Beach.
Herman was arrested in 2023 after an extensive investigation.
And today, victim's family members gave emotional impact statements.
Let's take a listen to some of them.
One of the hardest parts of this case has been living it publicly.
For years, my mother's murders has been discussed in articles, television specials, podcast, and across social media.
There are weeks when I cannot bring myself to open any social apps because I'm constantly confronted with reminders of the worst thing that's ever happened to me.
I still don't understand.
That weekend, that weekend, she was supposed to come home.
That weekend, family and friends were looking for her.
Loved ones were calling her.
She wasn't going to miss that weekend.
She never picked up the phone.
She didn't call anyone back because of you.
When I myself turned 25, it wasn't the joyful milestone that most young people enjoy.
It was jarring and painful because I knew that it meant I'd now lived longer than my mom did.
Today, I'm nearly 2 years older than she will ever be.
Rex Herman stole decades of life from a woman who should still be here making memories with the people who love her.
>> Huerman spoke as well just before the judge handed down his life sentence.
>> There are no words I can say. I am responsible for what was said in this room today.
The words I would say have no meaning.
And I'm going to leave it there at this time.
>> Are you a little bit sorry for what you did to these poor innocent women?
Eight women that you strangled to death. At least eight that we know of.
Are you at least a little bit sorry for that?
>> Yes.
>> Yes, I am.
>> You know what? You've been described as a very big man, but you're a disgusting and despicable small man, if you're a man at all.
and you're a coward.

Rodney Harrison. Rodney, you have been on this case since the very beginning.
You formed the task force that ultimately led to Humeman's arrest.
Your thoughts on the sentencing today and boy, what the judge said and what Humeman first said.
So, so a couple things here. Uh, the the first thing I want to share is it's not about me. It's it's about the the family members. It's about the survivors that lost a loved one, their their worlds torn apart.
Uh, knowing that these um questions took so long to be answered.
Uh, so there there is a part that is a little joy knowing that we were able to bring some type of comfort to the families.
were never going to bring their family members back.
Uh but just knowing that I had a role and a part in holding somebody accountable,
it's a good day for the uh for the good guys.
>> Yeah, absolutely.
You got to see regarding the the statements.
>> Yeah. And regarding the statements from Rex Sherman and the frustration from the judge, I understand it because there didn't seem to be any remorse.
nothing saying he's sorry. didn't even look uh at the family members and
thank God he's going to jail for the rest of his life.
>> Yeah. You know, it took years to end up where we are now.
Was there any point in this case that put you at a crossroads?
>> Yeah. Uh, you know, one of the crossroads was concerned, did we have the right people in place to investigate this crime when I first got assigned to Suffach County as a police commissioner?
And you hear all types of speculations and rumors who was involved and what happened.
But just being able to create a team and put all the law enforcement partners in the same room, coming up with ideas, suggestions, uh, investigative be able to
of interest and then slowly and putting a case together against Rex Sherman and then put him in a corner where he had to take a plea.
Um, everything paid its way off.
>> Yeah. Obviously, no winners in any of this, but do you believe the victims ultimately got justice?
>> Long overdue, but justice was served.
