>> Yep. John Scott, who was the first president of the United States?
>> George Washington.
>> No, President John Hansen. I know you're going to go, who? George Washington was the was the first president in 1789
under the Constitution. Hansen was president eight years earlier because under the Articles of Confederation, there was the title. The job was president of the United States in Congress assembled.
I talked to his descendant and his biographer about this, Peter Michael. He explains
>> who was the first president of the United States.
>> Frederick, Maryland's John Hansen.
>> Tell us a bit about who John Hansen was.
>> He was the first president of the first government.
We're on the second one right now. famously begun with Washington's inauguration in 1789, but for eight years before that, we had our original government with its Constitution, the Articles of Confederation, and its presidents who served one-year terms.
>> Well, I also talked to other historians who say, "No, it's not the same job as now, so George is still the president."

>> Who designed the American flag?
>> Betsy Ross.
Uh, no. The flag now, Um, the claim is the 50 star flag. Bob Heft.
Back in 1958, Bob Heft was a 17-year-old high school student. He was in Lancaster, Ohio, and he sewed a 50 star flag uh for his high school history class, got a B. His teacher said he would get an A if he sent it to Washington.
So, he does send it to the White House. I've seen the letters. He asked the White House President Eisenhower to declare his design as the 50s store flag when Hawaii and Alaska joined the union. And he says President
Eisenhower called him and said his design was picked. Take a listen to him.
>> I of course designed the flag of our country, our current flag.
>> Meet Bob Heft.
He says before he knew it, he got a call from President Dwight D. Eisenhower himself.
>> And I picked up the phone.
I wanted to let you know that I selected your flag as the official flag of our country.
>> and the rest is history. The 50 store flag we celebrate today is all thanks to Bob.
>> Well, is it true? Well, we go into that in the show and we do something really special.

Finally, John, last question. Who was Captain Kid?
Kid? A pirate, I always thought.
>> Yes, he is. Yes. Uh, infamous pirate.
But most people don't know, get this.
Captain Kid, Billy William Kid, was also a wealthy New Yorker. He had a wife and two kids. He had a mansion. He was a rich guy. Take a listen to Dina Gianopoulos, who's written a book about Captain Kid and his wife Sarah.
>> They were New York's power couple.
>> New York's power couple. Captain Kid.
>> Yes. They had a very normal life. They had two children. He was a family man.
>> You don't think of that as a a pirate like that.
>> No, you don't. And he was he was very educated. He wrote beautiful, beautiful letters. He had a fabulous signature.
>> And he also buried treasure right here in the East Coast. He buried a truck, 45 lbs of silver, gold, silk. Uh we'll show you where he did that. Uh it's actually Long Island.
Uh, and people say there's still more buried treasure from Captain Kid in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Jersey.
