We are less than 1 week away from the NATO Summit in Turkey as the Trump administration approves a $700 million arms sale to the country.
A State Department spokesperson releasing the following statement, quote, "The president has been clear, Turkey is a strong member of NATO. Turkey is a significant contributor to alliance operations and missions."
US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, joins me now.
And Mr. Ambassador, thank you so much for doing just that.
So, we are less than a week away from the NATO Summit.
Tell us about the importance of this summit and what we should expect to be accomplished here.
>> Well, good to be with you and Todd.
The NATO Summit is really the the first milepost.
in what we can count on our allies taking over the defense, the conventional defense of the European continent.
You know, we are going to be in Ankara and we're going to have the first report card.
We're going to demonstrate that our allies are stepping up, that they've spent in the first year since the Hague defense commitment over a hundred billion dollars on hard defense and capabilities.
And a commitment to to that increasing that and ultimately equalizing with the United States.
It's significant and it's only because of President Trump.
He is the one that made the 5% deal last year.
He is the one that is continuing to make sure that our allies are at pace in increasing their defense spending.
But most importantly, that that spending turns into real capabilities.
And as we all know, stronger allies mean a stronger NATO and that strength is what's going to guarantee the peace and it has guaranteed the peace for 77 years.
>> Well, Mr. Ambassador, you will be in Turkey which shares a border with Iran.
And right now, the United States and Iran are back to talking as opposed to fighting.
But there is concern that where we are right now gives Iran time and resources with them showing absolutely no position of change when it comes to their nuclear program or the Strait of Hormuz.
So, from your perspective, how should we view this?
>> Yeah, well, I mean, Trey was very clear in his report that the Strait of Hormuz is continuing to see increasing traffic,
that uh you know, the Iran nuclear uh program is underground and has completely been obliterated.
There's no navy, no air force, and you know, he's mentioned I think the most important piece, and that is the carrot and the
carrot and the sticks.
And we all need to remember that, you know, President Trump continues to hold all the cards, have all the options, and if necessary, use the world's most powerful military on the planet uh to continue to keep Iran engaged and uh heading towards peace.
But, you know, President Trump really is a negotiator first.
He's a peacemaker, and ultimately, uh we're going to get this deal uh in in the best place possible.
But, if we don't get a deal, and the 60 days lapses, and President Trump decides, then we'll make sure uh that the Iranians understand the consequences of not making a deal.
>> are still on the table there, according to the administration.
Um also, when it comes to Turkey, where the summit is going to be held, I mentioned it, the president, of course, shares a very good relationship with the president of Turkey, and the administration says that says that they are moving forward with this $700 million arms deal to Turkey.
Uh there are lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who are concerned about this because of Turkey's relationship with Russia and their possession of the Russian S-400 air defense system.
What can you tell us about this arms sale, and if this should give us cause for concern?
>> Well, you're right.
The President Trump has a great relationship with President Erdoğan, who's going to host us next week in Ankara for the NATO summit.
And, you know, he's President Trump is always going to make the right decision for the United States and our security and what's in the interest of our people.
But, you know, I was recently in Turkey in anticipation of the summit. I went to places like Izmir and Istanbul and uh and US bases including Incirlik.
what I can tell you is that Turkey is an incredibly capable ally.
They are seriously committed to the NATO alliance and also the security of themselves and their allies.
And so, you know, we need to continue to strengthen that relationship. We need all of our allies to be more like Turkey to have an industrial base to manufacture for example 50 ships at a time is what Turkey is building right now in their shipyards.
And so, we need to make sure that everyone's moving at pace.
But, you know, President Trump knows exactly how to play this out. He knows exactly that these engines, you know, are are important to building and securing the alliance and in the interest of the United States of America.

Well, the summit is July 7th and 8th.
