Eugene installs 'EUG' letters sculpture, will host unveiling 29%

The city of Eugene has installed a new "EUG" sculpture near the Hult Center.
According to the city, the sculpture was timed to debut before the World Athletics U20 Championships and is a "placemaking project" meant to "create a welcoming destination that encourages people to spend time downtown while celebrating what makes Eugene unique."
The sculpture consists of three brightly-colored 6-foot tall letters spelling "EUG" at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Willamette Street.
“Projects like the EUG letters help activate public spaces, encourage people to explore downtown and create places where community life naturally happens," Eugene downtown manager Eric Brown said in a news release.
According to the city, the installation was the culmination of "years of community interest in creating an iconic landmark that reflects Eugene’s identity."
A formal unveiling is scheduled for noon Aug. 4, but the sculpture is already installed.
The Aug. 4 event will include a series of group portraits with community members and local organizations in front of the letters.
The city has encouraged residents and visitors to tag photos of the letters with the tag #EUGscene.
The letters were funded with a combination of support from Eugene's Urban Renewal, Planning and Development, Cultural Services and Library, and Recreation and Cultural Services budgets.
