There's now another recreation option to enjoy with the opening of the South Eugene Meadows Trail, according to the City of Eugene’s Parks and Open Space department.
South Eugene Meadows Park is southwest of city limits and connects to Willamette Street.
It has 194 acres of upland prairie, oak savannah, oak woodlands, areas populated with Douglas firs and views of Spencer Butte.
The park includes a 3.8 mile “lollipop loop” shaped trail for hikers and bikers and is the newest segment of the Ridgeline Trail, which will offer even more places to explore on trails being added at Suzanne Arlie Park.
While the trail is complete and ready for public use, finishing touches are still being applied.
A new parking lot on Willamette Street will open to the public in coming weeks and a grand opening celebration will be scheduled for later this year.
The property was purchased in 2012 and is covered by a Conservation Easement recognizing the site’s important habitats.
The easement, administered by the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board and the Bonneville Power Administration, restricts the use of motorized vehicles on the property, so electric assist on bicycles must be turned off within the park.
The project cost $1.5 million.
The Eugene Parks Foundation raised $665,000 for the trail’s construction and additional funding came from municipal System Development Charges.
The 2023 Parks and Recreation Levy will fund ongoing maintenance of the park.
