ICE immigration actions reported at Reno-Tahoe International Airport ⁠8%

Federal ICE agents are conducting operations at Reno-Tahoe International Airport, the airport confirmed this week. 
It appears to be part of recent efforts by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to expand the categories of air travelers it detains, including those with expired visas, in order to help reach the Trump administration goal of 2,000 immigration arrests every day. 
“ICE has recently advised the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority that federal immigration enforcement activity has occurred at Reno-Tahoe International Airport,” Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority spokesperson Jena Esposito said in a statement Aug.

Esposito directed questions to the Department of Homeland Security, which did not confirm what activities happened recently at the Reno airport. 
Asked if ICE agents were making arrests at the Reno airport, an unnamed DHS spokesperson responded, “DHS reversed the horrendous Biden-era policy that allowed aliens in our country illegally to jet around our country. 
Under President Trump, DHS will no longer tolerate this. 
This administration is working diligently to ensure that aliens in our country illegally can no longer fly unless it is out of our country to self-deport.”

Are travelers allowed to record video of ICE actions? 
Undercover ICE agents in Nevada recently attracted attention when trying to arrest Phu Nguyen on July 13 at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. 
Nguyen is an undocumented immigrant from Australia who was born in Vietnam. 
DHS told the RGJ that Nguyen entered the U.S. legally in 2013 but his visa expired in 2015. 
A crowd surrounded the ICE agents — dressed like typical passengers, including one in a COVID-style mask — and recorded video of the attempted arrest. 
The ICE agents ended up walking off down an airport concourse. 
Esposito said video recording is allowed at the Reno airport, whose code is RNO. 
“RNO is a public-use airport,” she said. 
“We respect individuals’ ability to capture what is happening around them while on property and ask that doing so does not compromise the safety of others or disrupt airport operations.” 
Is Reno airport security working with ICE? 
ICE is an independent federal agency and not affiliated with the Reno airport. 
“The RTAA Police Department’s role is to maintain the safe and secure operations of the airport,” Esposito said. 
“When other law enforcement agencies request to conduct activity on airport property, we do not directly assist those federal operations; however, we coordinate with the agency to minimize any impact on passenger travel, airport operations, or the airport’s ability to serve passengers safely.” 
Because RNO is a public-use airport subject to federal regulation, federal agents have broad authority to enter airport grounds and do what they want. 
“The RTAA Police Department cannot prohibit federal agents from conducting interviews or arrests on airport property,” Esposito said.
